August 7: Garfield Peak @ Crater Lake, Leave at 8:00 AM
Directions: All the way up Highway 62 to Crater Lake Park entrance on left. Drive to parking behind the Lodge. EDT: 2 hours. Description: Ascend Garfield Peak. Lunch with great views from the Peak. Distance: 3.5 miles RT. Climbing: 1,076'. Bring Park Pass if available. Refreshment stop at Annie's Creek Cafe near park exit post hike. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 190 miles
August 14: Kangaroo Lake to Bull Lake, PCT (CA), Leave at 8:00 AM
Directions: Head South on I-5 to exit 766 (Gazelle). Turn left (south) on Highway 99 for 7 miles to Gazelle. Turn Right in Gazelle onto the Gazelle Callahan Highway. Drive 18 miles to left turn for Kangaroo Lake (clearly marked) on Rail Creek Road. Proceed to Kangaroo Lake parking just past the Fen Trail parking (6.8 miles). The TH for Fen Trail is opposite the Fen Trail Parking. EDT: 1:35. Description: Climb to the saddle beyond Kangaroo Lake and down a short distance to the PCT. Turn left on the PCT and follow it all the way to Bull Lake. Destination Elevation: 7,080 feet. Distance: 8 miles; Elevation Gain :1,200 feet. Total Ascent: 1,400 feet. Optional descent to Bull Lake adds 1 mile and roughly 300 feet of ascent. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.
August 21: East Applegate Ridge (Jack Ash Trail)
Directions: Head up I-5 to exit 24, Phoenix. Left into Phoenix and then right on OR-99. Turn left onto Stage Road then left on Griffin Lane. In about a mile turn right onto West Griffin Creek Road for 2.9 miles which becomes Poorman’s Creek Road for another 1.1 miles to a T junction and left onto Sterling Creek Road. Go 4 miles to the 4 mile marker and the trail is well marked 100 feet past the sign. Description: We will do an out and back of about 7 miles with about 800 feet of climb. Exceptional views. August 28:Sky Lakes Wilderness via Cold Springs TH
Hike canceled due to unhealthy smoke levels in hike area
Directions: Take DIM to Highway 140, turn right (east) for 3.2 miles to milepost 41 (sign to “Cold Springs Trail Head”). Turn left (north) onto Road 3651 for 10.1 miles on a dusty road to the Cold Springs TH at road end for parking. EDT: 75 minutes.
Description: Hike 0.6 mi to a fork and take a left onto Cold Spring Trail for 1.8 mi to the intersection with South Rock Creek and Deer Lake Trails. Turn right onto South Rock Creek trail for 0.3 miles. Turn left onto the trail to Lakes Natasha, Elizabeth, and Isherwood (0.6 miles). We will have lunch at one of these lakes and then return the same way to the Cold Springs trailhead and cars. Hike distance: 6.6 miles, elevation gain 400 feet. Weather forecast.
