October 5: Castle Lake to Castle Arch – Leave at 7:30 AM. This is a new hike and we will join the Siskiyou Wanderers from the Shasta area. Difficult Hike. Take the trail to Heart Lake from the Castle Lake parking lot to the Crags Wilderness Boundary, where we will follow the heavily used informal “Castle View Trail” over the ridge to the PCT to the saddle just to the south. Then following an off trail bushwhacking route along the ridge top and the northeast side of the ridge to the arch. On the way back we will detour to Heart Lake. Distance 7.5 miles. Elevation gain 2,700 feet. The approach to the Arch includes a climb up a steep lightly forested slope. Weather forecast. RT Driving mileage 160 miles.
October 12: Gumboot Saddle to Devil’s Crest - Leave at 8:00 AM
This new hike for Monday is well worth the drive. Moderate hike with fabulous views. TH: Down I-5 to Exit 38, Central Mount Shasta. Right on Hatchery lane .3 miles then left on Old Stage Rd for .3 miles. Right on West Barr/ NF 26 for 18 miles. PCT TH is at left across from parking at summit of crest. Good paved roads. 4 mile hike along saddle with views of several lakes, then lunch overlooking Devil’s Pocket with huge views of Shasta, Lassen and Eddie. Moderate hike. Distance 8 miles. October 19: East Boulder Lake - (p. 232 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: South on I-5 to Yreka Exit 773 and take Highway 3 for 39 miles through Fort Jones and Etna to Callahan. Right in Callahan (behind the Emporium Saloon) on South Fork Road for 0.7 miles then straight on McKeen Road (40N17) for 2.3 miles to the McKeen Divide. Left (SE) on 39N63 (Boulder) for 2.9 miles, left on 39N10 for 1.2 miles and right (SE but not a uey) on 39N63 for 0.6 miles to the 4 car parking area on the left just before the TH. EDT: 2 hours (it used to be 1:45 but McKeen and Boulder roads have deteriorated considerably since 2018). Beautiful hike in the Scott Mountains of the Trinity Alps Wilderness past East Boulder Lake and several smaller alpine lakes / ponds up to the ridge with views of Craggy Peak, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Eddy, Scott Valley and the Russian Wilderness. Distance: 9 miles. Climbing: 2,500'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 170 miles.
October 26: Boccard Point
TH: From Highway 66 turn onto Soda Mountain Road just before reaching Greensprings Summit; Proceed some 5 miles to the PCT crossing right after passing under power lines for the second time. EDT: 45 minutes. Description: Incredible views from Mt. Shasta and Pilot Rock to Mt. McLoughlin. Follow the PCT for about 3 miles and turn left to follow a trail towards Boccard Point. We will have lunch at Boccard Point and have the option of finding Little Pilot Peak on the way back to the cars (adds about ½ mile). Distance: about 10 miles, elevation gain: about 1,500 feet.
