Leave from the Rite Aid parking lot on Ashland Street at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. January 5: Sterling Mine Ditch – Deming Gulch to Grub GulchNew hike
TH: Up I-5 to the Talent Exit. Left into Talent and right onto 99 North for 0.4 miles. Left on Colver Road for 2.1 miles to a left onto Pioneer Road for 1.9 miles to a right to stay on Pioneer Road for 2.2 miles to a left for 1.3 miles to stay on Pioneer. Left on Griffin Creek Road for 1.3 miles to a continue straight on Griffin Lane for 4.3 miles to leave a shuttle car on the left near 7595 Griffin Lane. Continue on Griffin Lane for 0.5 miles to a left onto Sterling Creek Road for 2.2 miles to a left (at the trailhead sign on the right) onto 39-2-8 for 0.3 miles to a left to stay on 39-2-8 for 0.7 miles to the TH on the right. EDT: 40 minutes. Description: Head north on the Sterling Mine Ditch for 3 miles to the intersection with the Grub Gulch Trail. Then up the hill for 2.5 miles with nice views down into the valley to the junction of the trail leading back down to Griffin Lane through many mining claims ending up walking through areas of hydraulic mining from the gold rush days. Distance 8 miles; elevation gain 1,000’. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 50 miles.

January 12: Easy Loop in the Ashland Watershed
TH: From Rite Aid head west on Ashland Street, bear right on Siskiyou Boulevard, at the light just past Triangle park turn left on Morton, then a quick right on Iowa up to the top, left on Terrace up to the reservoir on Waterline. EDT: 10 minutes. Description: Get an early start on your New Year's Resolutions. Head up Red Queen to the Loop Road, then down Caterpillar to Alice in Wonderland to Jub Jub and back to the cars. Plan to have lunch in town at a restaurant of the group's choosing. Distance: 5 miles. Elevation gain: 1,100'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 10 miles.

January 19: Bull Gap Loop - Snowshoe Trip.
TH: Take Highway I-5 South to Exit 6, the Mt. Ashland ski road. Up the ski road to the Bull Gap turn off.  Sno-Park permit required; passengers should help pay for it.. EDT: 30 minutes. Description: We are going to do a loop; out on the Bull Gap Road, down the PCT and back via an old logging road and the Bull Gap Road. We should be done early, so plan to have lunch at an Ashland restaurant of the group's choice.  Distance: 3.5 miles; elevation gain: 650 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles.

January 26: Lost Creek Lake (west shore) (p. 82 in 100 Hikes)
TH: Take Highway 62 to Lost Creek Lake and turn left onto Takelma Road at "Fish Hatchery" sign; drive past fish hatchery, power plant and dam to the turn to the boat ramp at 2.2 miles from Highway 62. Continue 0.4 miles to the boat ramp parking lot / TH. EDT: 75 minutes. Description: follow Lost Creek Lake trail to our usual lunch bench; return the same way Distance: 9.6 miles; elevation gain: about 1,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
