June 3: Applegate Lake
TH: From Jacksonville continue straight on Highway 238 to Ruch. In Ruch, turn left towards Upper Applegate for 14.9 miles. Then turn left at Applegate Dam for 1.2 miles to French Gulch TH parking on the right. EDT one hour.
Description: 6.4-mile loop around the peninsula. French Gulch Trail to Payette Trail, left onto Osprey Trail 0.7 to veer left onto Calsh Trail then right on Payette Trail to French Gulch parking. 400' elevation gain. Weather Forecast. 80 miles RT.
June 10: Castle Lake (CA) to Heart Lake 8:00 AM from Rite Aid
TH: South on I-5 to Exit 738, the central Mount Shasta exit. Right on West Lake Rd, Left on W. A. Barr Road (10 miles), Left on Castle Lake Road to parking and TH at the road end. EDT: 1:40.
Description: Walk out to Castle Lake, then hike trail west to the Heart-shaped Lake (nice for swimming on a warm day) return to TH, 5 miles RT, 1,000' gain. Can stop for post-hike refreshments. Weather forecast. RT mileage. 170 miles.
June 17: Union Creek Trail (p.88 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:30 AM
TH: Take Highway 62 north from Medford to Union Creek; EDT: 90 minutes.
Description:The trail starts over by the creek. It meanders about 4 miles along the creek. Lush vegetation, but the trail has been cleared by the Forest Service. 8 miles RT with not much gain. Distance: 8.2 miles; elevation gain: 600 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.
June 24: McCloud River Falls (CA) 8:00 AM from Rite Aid
TH: I-5 south past Mt Shasta, take the McCloud exit, drive east on Highway 89 for 17 miles, and turn right at the Fowlers Camp sign to the parking lot. EDT one hour 45 minutes.
Description: Three waterfalls viewed while hiking up the McCloud River in a volcanic canyon. It's worth seeing, especially the Middle Falls. 5+ miles RT, about 500' gain. Weather Forecast. 190 miles RT.
