August 1: Soda Mountain Road to Little Pilor Peak
TH: From Highway 66 turn onto Soda Mountain Road just before reaching Greensprings Summit; Proceed about 5 miles to the PCT crossing right after passing under the power lines for the second time. EDT: 45 minutes. Description: We will head south on the PCT in the Soda Mountain direction for a few miles to Little Pilot Peak for a view and early lunch. It should be about 4 to 5 miles total for the day's hike. Weather Forecast RT mileage: 40 miles.
August 8: Crater Lake hike to Garfield Peak - Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: All the way up Highway 62 to Crater Lake Park entrance. Drive to parking behind the Lodge. EDT: 2 hours. Description: Ascend Garfield Peak. Lunch at the Lodge, if open. Distance: 3.4 miles RT. Climbing: 1,000'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 190 miles
August 15: Upper Rogue- Rogue River Gorge to Natural Bridge
TH: Drive up Highway 62 about 54 miles to a left just past Becky's into the parking area for Rogue River Gorge. Northwest Forest Pass or day pass required. EDT: 1:20. Description: View the Gorge from several viewpoints, then follow the fence to a trail that takes you down the Rogue past the confluence with Union Creek and on down to the Natural Bridge viewpoints. 8 miles down and back mostly level. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 140 miles
August 22: Sky Lakes via Cold Springs TH
Directions: Take DIM to Highway 140, turn right (east) for 3.2 miles to milepost 41 (sign to “Cold Springs Trail Head”). Turn left (north) onto Road 3651 for 10.1 miles on a dusty road to the Cold Springs TH at road end for parking. EDT: 75 minutes.
Description: Hike 0.6 mi to a fork and take a left onto Cold Spring Trail for 1.8 mi to the intersection with South Rock Creek and Deer Lake Trails. Turn right onto South Rock Creek trail for 0.3 miles. Turn left onto the trail to Lakes Natasha, Elizabeth, and Isherwood (0.6 miles). We will have lunch at one of these lakes and then return the same way to the Cold Springs trailhead and cars. Hike distance: 6.6 miles, elevation gain 400 feet. Weather forecast. RT driving distance: 110 miles.
August 29: Big Red Mountain (OR) Leave at 8:30 AM
Directions: From Talent on Highway 99 take a right on Rapp Road and follow Rapp which turns into Wagner Creek Road for 8 miles to a left to remain on Wagner Creek Road which becomes Wagner Gap Road / FS-22. Continue on another 10 miles (18 miles total from the turn off of Highway 99) to the junction with FS-20. Right on FS-20 for 0.8 miles to the Siskiyou Gap parking in the clearing on the right. Description: The PCT winds around Big Red Mountain through cool woods and along some cliffs with a good trail. Lots of views. Near the high point before the trail heads down, turn left on a gentle slope through fields to the top of Big Red Mountain. Lunch on rocks with 360 degree view after touring the summit. Distance 6 miles. Elevation gain 1,200 feet. Weather forecast. Driving Mileage: 40 miles RT.
