Leave from the Rite Aid parking lot on Ashland Street promptly at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sun-screen, insect repellent and rain gear as appropriate. In winter, bring layers. TH = trailhead; EDT = estimated drive time; RT = round trip mileage; PCT = Pacific Crest Trail; DIM = Dead Indian Memorial Highway.  Vaccination against COVID19 is required. September 9: No hike

September 16: Crater Lake Garfield Peak & Flower Hike - 
TH: Drive to parking behind the Lodge. EDT: 2 hours. Description: Ascend Garfield Peak. Return to cars and do a flower hike near Park Headquarters on the rim road. Do the rim road, stopping at various view points. Lunch location according to timing. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 220 miles.

September 23: Azalea Lake Overlook  Leave at 8:30 AM
TH: Thru Jacksonville on Highway 238. In Ruch, make a left onto Upper Applegate Road and proceed past the dam and Applegate Lake to the T junction at the south end of the lake. Right at the T onto Road 10 (also known as Carberry Creek Road). Proceed about 7 1/2 miles to the second Forest Service Road to the left, FS 1030 and make a left. In exactly 5 miles turn left on FS 400. There will be a sign marked Fir Glen. In 4 1/2 miles FS 400 changes names to 1040/700 and continues straight. Shortly after Road 850 turns up to the right go straight and continue on to the TH parking in 1/4 mile at a large TH at the end of the road. EDT: 2 hours. Note that FS 850 was vastly improved a few years ago and is now easy to spot as well as being easier on vehicles. The Azalea Lake/Fir Glade Trail #955 goes straight past Fir Glade to an intersection with trail #906 about 2 miles out (#906 goes right to Sucker Gap). Continue straight on #955 2 1/2 miles to the Azalea lake overlook. Distance: about 9 miles return. Total ascent is moderate.  Weather forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.

September 30: Seven Lakes Trail to Devil's Peak Overlook on the PCT Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Crater Lake Highway to the Butte Falls Highway into Butte Falls.  Continue through town for 1 mile, left on the Prospect Road for 9 miles.  Right on Lodgepole Road 34 for 8.5 miles, straight on Road 37 for 0.4 miles and then right on gravel Road 3780 for 4.1 miles to the Seven Lakes TH. EDT: 1:35. Follow the 7 Lakes trail for about 3 miles and at the summit before descending to South Lake, turn right and take Devil's Peak Trail a mile up to the PCT . Turn right on the PCT and go about 1/3 of a mile to Shale Butte Overlook. From the Devils Peak Trail there is a view of the Seven Lakes and the Rim of Crater Lake from 7200 feet. From Shale Butte above Finch Lake there is a 270 degree view from Devil's Peak, across the Klamath Basin and all the way right to Roxy Anne in Medford. Distance: 10 miles RT; elevation gain: 2,000 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 140 miles.
