Leave from the Rite Aid parking lot on Ashland Street promptly at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sun-screen, insect repellent and rain gear as appropriate. March 4: Tunnel Ridge TH to Little Applegate TH
TH: Head up I-5 to exit 24, Phoenix. Left into Phoenix and then right on OR-99. Turn left onto Stage Road then for left on Griffin Lane. In about a mile turn right onto West Griffin Creek Road for 2.9 miles which becomes Poormans Creek Road for another 1.1 miles to a T junction and left onto Sterling Creek Road. Continue to Little Applegate Road, and turn left. Continue to the Tunnel Gulch TH and leave the hikers and then position a shuttle car at the Little Applegate TH. EDT: 50 minutes. Description: Trail starts out uphill, finishes downhill. Good views of the Siskiyous. 500 feet elevation gain from the TH to the Mine Ditch. Another 500 feet of ascent to our viewpoint. About 1,150 total ascent and 6.2 miles. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 80 Miles from from Rite Aid to the East Applegate TH where we leave the shuttle.
March 11: Cathedral Hills
TH: North on I-5 to exit 55, US-199 South / Redwood Highway. Follow US-199 south for 2.5 miles to a left onto OR-238 for 2.8 miles to a left onto Espey Road for 0.3 miles to a left to stay on Espey Road for 0.3 miles to the TH. EDT: 1 hour.
Description: Cathedral Hills is a large complex of intertwining trails with ups and downs. Hike 6-7 miles. Ascent 1,000 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
March 18: Applegate Lake Loop (p. 147 in 100 Hikes)
TH: Take Highway 238 from Jacksonville to Ruch (8 miles); take Upper Applegate Road 15 miles to Applegate Dam; drive left across the dam to the French Gulch TH (1.2 miles); EDT: 60 minutes. Description: Make a loop on the Applegate Lake Trail system in a clockwise direction so that we get the uphill out of the way before enjoying lunch on Hal's Point. Distance: 7.6 miles; elevation gain: about 1,000 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 80 miles.
March 25: Lower Layton Mine Trail
TH: North on I-5 to exit 55 for Grants Pass. Follow Highway 199 for 3 miles to a left on Highway 238 towards Williams. South on the Williams Highway to the town of Williams, then south on the East Fork Road to a left (east) turn on to Panther Gulch Road (Bureau of Land Management Road 39-5-2). Head east on Panther Gulch for 2.3 miles (paved, then good gravel) to a T-junction where we parked. Description: At right turn at the T-junction, quickly look for the lower trail on the right. EDT: 1:10. The Lower Layton Mine Trail is a ditch trail mostly level about 7 miles out and back. Can return to Ashland through the scenic Applegate valley on Highway 238. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
