Leave from the Rite Aid parking lot on Ashland Street promptly at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sun-screen, insect repellent and rain gear as appropriate. April 1: Viewpoint Mike (near Lost Creek Lake)
TH: From Medford drive Highway 62 past the turn off for the Lost Creek Lake fish hatchery and take next right a few hundred yards later onto a paved road. The parking area is soon after on the right and for the trailhead, cross the road at the back left of the parking and you will find a sign marked Viewpoint Mike. EDT: 60 min. Description: very nicely laid out trail parallels Highway 62 as it climbs through varied terrain to a large rock outcrop with a stone wall looking down on Lost Creek Lake. Distance: 6 miles RT; elevation gain: 1,200 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
April 8: East Applegate Ridge
TH: Head up I-5 to exit 24, Phoenix. Left into Phoenix and then right on OR-99. Turn left onto Stage Road then for left on Griffin Lane. In about a mile turn right onto West Griffin Creek Road for 2.9 miles which becomes Poorman’s Creek Road for another 1.1 miles to a T junction and left onto Sterling Creek Road. Go 4 miles to the 4 mile marker and the trail is well marked 100 feet past the sign. We will do an out and back of about 7.5 miles with about 800 feet of climb. Exceptional views. EDT: 35 minutes. April 22: Wolf Gap to Armstrong Gulch:
TH: Head up I-5 to exit 24, Phoenix. Left into Phoenix and then right on OR-99. Left onto Stage Road then left onto Griffin Creek Road. In one mile turn right on Griffen Creek Road and continue to a T Junction at Sterling Creek Road. Left on Sterling Creek and between Miles 9 and 10 look for a small TH sign on the right indicating a left turn to the THs. At the next trail signs, go straight to Armstrong Gulch TH and leave a shuttle car, returning to the trail signs to turn right as indicated towards Deming Gulch and Wolf Gap on 39-2-8, another 2 1/2 miles. EDT: 50 minutes. Description: Trail starts out downhill for 1.5 miles to the Sterling Mine Ditch, then right 6.8 miles slightly downhill to Armstrong Gulch. Distance: 8.3 miles; elevation loss: 800 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 70 miles.
April 29: Cathedral Hills
TH: North on I-5 to exit 55, US-199 South / Redwood Highway. Follow US-199 south for 2.5 miles to a left onto OR-238 for 2.8 miles to a left onto Espey Road for 0.3 miles to a left to stay on Espey Road for 0.3 miles to the TH. EDT: 1 hour.
Description: Cathedral Hills is a large complex of intertwining trails with ups and downs. Hike 6-7 miles. Ascent 1,000 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
