Wednesday Hike Schedule for September 2021

Leave from the Rite Aid parking lot on Ashland Street at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. September 1: PCT from Cook & Green Pass to Lilly Pad Lake (p. 150 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM Hike leader: Francie Skinner
TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T. Left on Elliot Creek Road / NF-1050 for 2.1 miles. Right on NF-1055 for 9.8 miles to the TH at Cook & Green Pass. High clearance vehicles recommended. EDT: 1:45. Description: We will be hiking on the PCT on the ridge above Echo Lake for a nice view down to the lake (AKA Sabin's View). Follow the PCT west along the crest with views of the Red Buttes, Mt. Shasta and the Klamath River Basin along with the Marble Mountains. Optional hike down and back to Towhead Lake which adds 2 miles and 600' of up to the hike. Return via the old mining road and Bee Camp Spring. Distance: 8.5 miles; elevation gain about 2,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.

September 8: Azalea Lake Pass above Azalea Lake (Red Buttes Wilderness - p. 154 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Go past the Applegate store, cross the bridge and head south on Thompson Creek Road for 11.9 miles to a left on Carberry Creek Road. Go 2.6 miles to a right onto NF 1030. After crossing bridge make an immediate left and go 5.1 miles to a left onto NF 400. After 4.7 miles on NF 400 bear right at the fork and then continue left in 1/2 mile (i.e. do not go up NF 850) to the TH. EDT: 2 hours. Description: We are going to take a look at how this area is recovering from the Fort Complex fires in 2014. Distance 10 miles; elevation gain: 2,000'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.

September 15: Porcupine Lake via the PCT  - Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Take I-5 south to Exit 738, the Central Mount Shasta exit. Right on Hatchery Lane for 0.3 miles to a left on Old Stage Road for 0.3 miles. Straight on West A. Barr / NF 26 for 17 miles to the TH. (Note: there is a signed fork indicating Gumboot Lake in 0.5 miles to the left.  Continue to the right, climbing up the cirque that contains Gumboot Lakes.  The PCT Gumboot Trailhead and parking are located at the summit.)  EDT: 1:45  Description: We will follow the PCT for 5.6 miles north from Gumboot Saddle, traversing the Eddy Range just below its crest most of the way.  The route has spectacular views nearly the entire distance, including Mt. Shasta.  Distance:  11.5 miles, elevation gain 1,300 feet.  Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles. 

September 22: Cold Springs TH to Margurette Lake 11-4-20
TH: TH: Take DIM to 140, right (east) for 3.2 miles and then left (north) on 3651 for 10.1 miles to the TH at road end. EDT 75 minutes.  Description: Out and back hike past the Heavenly Twin Lakes to Trapper and Margurette Lakes.  We are following the recovery of the forest after the 2017 fire. Distance: 11 miles, elevation gain 950 feet.  Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 110 miles.

September 29: Gumboot Saddle to Boulder Peak - Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Down I-5 to Exit 738, the Central Mount Shasta exit. Right on Hatchery Lane for 0.3 miles to a left on Old Stage Road for 0.3 miles. Straight on West A. Barr / NF 26 for 17 miles to the TH. EDT: 1:45. Description: Head down the PCT to the junction with the Seven Lakes trail. Follow the trail and the old Jeep road up past Helen Lake and then bushwhack across the ridge to Boulder Peak. Lunch on Boulder Peak with views of Shasta, Eddy and Lassen. Return the same way. Distance: 9 miles, Elevation gain: 2,300 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.
