Leave from the Rite Aid parking lot on Ashland Street at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. August 4: Abbott Butte from the Yellow Jacket TH (p. 89 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:00 AM
TH: Take Highway 62 towards Crater Lake. Just past the Mile 51 marker make a left onto Abbott Creek Road (the sign on Highway 62 says Woodruff Campground). Cross the river and at mile 2.7 (from the Highway 62 turn) make a right onto Woodruff Creek Road. Continue following Woodruff Creek Road (NF-700) through several intersections to the Yellow Jacket TH on the right at mile 10.1. The last 5 miles or so are gravel with the occasional pothole. High clearance vehicles recommended. EDT: 2 hours. Description: Follow the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Trail (#1470) up and across the ridge to Elephant Head Lake and then on up over Cougar Butte to connect with the abandoned road to the top of Abbott Butte. Return the same way. RT distance is 8 miles with 2,500' of climbing. Lots of wildflowers this year. Wether forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.

August 11: Mt. Eddy (opposite Mt Shasta in California) (p. 210 in 100 Hikes) -Leave at 8:00 AM.
TH: Drive south on I-5 and take Stewart Springs Road exit (about 1.5 miles after passing rest area next to Weed); turn right at both stop signs, then left onto Stewart Springs Road; after 4 miles, turn right onto Road 17 for 9.3 miles to the upper / PCT TH. Drop the hikers here and then position a shuttle car 1.3 miles further on down the road at the hairpin curve at the lower TH. EDT: 105 minutes. Description: Wildflower heaven, inviting lakes, spectacular views of Mt Shasta; alternate turn around point is the ridge top before the long, barren slog to the summit. Distance: 10 miles; elevation gain to summit 2,200 feet, to ridge 1,400 ft. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.

August 18: Wards Fork Gap to Buckhorn Springs Meet at 8:00 AM
TH: Through Jacksonville to a left in Ruch towards Applegate Lake. Just past the now shuttered Country Club cross the bridge and make a left on Beaver Creek Road / NF-20 for 14 miles to Silver Fork Gap. Take the road at 11 o'clock which is NF-2025 for 6.7 miles to NF-48N16 and continue on 1.5 miles to Wards Fork Gap. EDT: 2 hours. Description: Richard suggested this hike for its spectacular views. Head southwest on the PCT with great views of Scraggy Mountain and Condrey Mountain. Lunch on the ridge above Buckhorn Springs and then return on NF-40S01 (which parallels the trail but with new and different views to the east) to its intersection with the PCT. Distance: 10.5 miles. Elevation gain: 2,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.

August 25: Hidden Valley - Mt. Shasta Meet at 8:00 AM
TH: Take the first Mt. Shasta Exit (mile 740). East on Mt. Shasta Blvd. to the first left and then right on Ski Village Drive over to a left onto Everitt Memorial Highway up to Bunny Flat. EDT: 90 min; Description: Hike up to Horse Camp and the Sierra Club lodge to pick up the Mt. Shasta Circumnavigation Trail.  From there head up sandy forested slopes to the pinnacle overlooking Hidden Valley and the high mountain grandeur of Shasta and Shastina. Poles are useful on this hike because much of the trail above Horse Camp is over boulders and scree. 6 miles, 2,300 feet of climbing. Weather forecast. RT mileage 170 miles.
