May 6: Rogue Gorge: Union Creek to Woodruff Bridge (p.86 in 100 Hikes) - Leave at
TH: Take Highway 62 north past Prospect to the turn for Woodruff Bridge (Abbott Creek Road / NF-68). Go 1.8 miles to the bridge and leave a shuttle car on the left. Return to Highway 62 and continue north to the Union Creek Campground and park in the lot on the left, just before Becky's. EDT: 1:40. Description: Follow Union Creek down to the junction with the Rogue River and from there continue on the Rogue River trail down to Woodruff Bridge. It's springtime along the Rogue - dogwoods and other flowers should be in bloom. Distance: 7 miles; elevation gain: mostly downhill. Weather Report. RT mileage: 150 miles.
May 13: Black Butte (p. 216 in 100 Hikes)
TH: Take the first Mt. Shasta Exit (740). East on Mt. Shasta Boulevard for about 3/4 mile to the first left and then a quick right on Ski Village Drive over to Everitt Memorial Highway. Left on Everitt for 1.6 miles to a left at the Black Butte Trail sign. From there, basically follow the best road at each intersection which is 41N18 (for a map to the TH click HERE). From the turn off of Everitt go 400' to a right. Continue 1 mile to a left for 0.4 miles to a right for 0.9 miles to a final left for 1 mile to the TH. EDT: 90 minutes. Description: switchback your way to the top for spectacular views all the way from the Sacramento Valley to Oregon including Mt. Shasta, Mt. Eddy, Mt. Lassen, Castle Crags, Mt. McLoughlin and the Klamath range. Distance: 5.2 miles RT; 1,925 feet of climbing. Weather Forecast. RT mileage 160 miles.
May 20: Grizzly Peak and Lost Creek Falls
TH: Drive Dead Indian Memorial Highway 7 miles; turn left on Shale City Road and follow Grizzly Peak Trail signs: 3 miles on pavement, 2 miles on dirt. EDT: 30 minutes. Description: Two hikes for the price of one. We will first do Grizzly Peak and then head over to visit Lost Creek Falls. Spring flowers should be in full bloom; great views over the Rogue Valley. For both hikes: distance: 8 miles; elevation gain: 2,200 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles
Directions to Lost Creek Falls TH: From Rite Aid head up DIM for 7 miles to a left onto Shale City Road. Go past the turn to the Grizzly Peak TH on the left at 3 miles from DIM and stay right at 3.6 miles. At 5 miles from DIM you will see the White Cattle Rustling sign on the left. Stay right until a hard left at 6 miles. At 8 miles go left and follow around to the TH on the left at 9 miles from DIM.
May 27: Little Grayback Trail to Squaw Peak Leaving Rite Aid at 8:00 AM
TH: From Ruch travel south on Upper Applegate Road to Applegate Dam; follow the road across the dam for 1.5 miles; turn left for 2 miles to the French Gulch divide TH; EDT: 60 min. Description: steady climb across the southern slopes of Little Grayback to Squaw Peak; return the same way; watch out for Graybacks (ticks) Distance: 11 miles; 2,500 feet of climbing. If you don't want to go all the way to Squaw Peak there is an option to stop on the ridge at a nice viewpoint for an 8 mile / 1,300' hike. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 90 miles
