Wednesday Hike Schedule for January 2020

Leave from the Rite Aid parking lot on Ashland Street at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. January 1: Easy Loop in the Ashland Watershed
TH: From Rite Aid head west on Ashland Street, bear right on Siskiyou Boulevard, at the light just past Triangle park turn left on Morton, then a quick right on Iowa up to the top, left on Terrace up to the reservoir on Waterline. EDT: 10 minutes. Description: Get an early start on your New Year's Resolutions. Head up Red Queen to the Loop Road, then down Caterpillar to Alice in Wonderland to Jub Jub and back to the cars. Plan to have lunch in town at a restaurant of the group's choosing. Distance: 5 miles. Elevation gain: 1,100'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 10 miles.

January 8:: Collings Mountain - Applegate Lake (p.146 in 100 Hikes).
TH: Proceed through Jacksonville on Highway 238 to Ruch. Left on Upper Applegate Road for 16 miles to the Hart-Tish TH where we drop the shuttle car; park on the west side of the road by the guardrail. Continue south along the lake for another 2.5 miles to the Watkins TH. EDT: 75 minutes. Description: woodsy trail with excellent views. Distance: 7 miles; climbing: 2,500 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 90 miles.

January 15: Pederson Nordic Trail Snowshoe
TH: Take DIM to the PCT crossing / Pederson Sno-Park just past milepost 27. Sno-Park Permit required; passengers should help pay for it. EDT: 45 minutes. Description: Head north on the Pederson Nordic Trail for 2 miles to the Brown Mountain Shelter.  After lunch take the Hyatt / Lake of the Woods trail southwest about 1 mile to the Pederson snowmobile trail.  Follow the snowmobile trail back to DIM. Distance 5 miles; elev. gain: 500 feet. Fish Lake SNOTEL. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 60 miles.

January 22: Snowshoe Above Hyatt and Howard Prairie Lakes
TH: Up DIM to the Howard Prairie Lake turn onto Hyatt Prairie Road. Continue 6.4 miles to a left onto Hyatt Dam Road just past the snowmobile crossing sign. Park at the first house on the right which is Keeley's lake house. Description: Up the ridge between Hyatt and Howard Prairie Lakes to a lookout over Howard Prairie Lake with views all the way to Mt. Bachelor. Follow around to the PCT to a knob for lunch with views to the south as far as Mt. Shasta. Distance: 5 miles. Climbing: 900'. Howard Prairie SNOTEL. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 50 miles.

January 29: Lost Creek Lake (west shore) (p. 82 in 100 Hikes) Hike leader: Francie Skinner
TH: Take Highway 62 to Lost Creek Lake and turn left onto Takelma Road at "Fish Hatchery" sign; drive past fish hatchery, power plant and dam to the turn to the boat ramp at 2.2 miles from Highway 62. Continue 0.4 miles to the boat ramp parking lot / TH. EDT: 75 minutes. Description: follow Lost Creek Lake trail to our usual lunch bench; return the same way Distance: 9.6 miles; elevation gain: about 1,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
