April 1: Lower Rogue River Trail: Grave Creek to Alder Creek (p. 189 in 101 Hikes)
TH: Take I-5 north to Merlin (Exit 61); drive thru Merlin and follow Galice Road 19 miles to the far side of the Grave Creek bridge; turn left downhill to boat ramp and TH; EDT: 90 minutes. Description: Follow north rim of Rogue River canyon past Rainie Falls to Alder Creek and back; spectacular scenery, but trail is a little rough in places. You may find poles useful on this hike for both the occasional side stream crossings as well as the rocky up and down trail. Distance: 10 miles; About 2,500' of up on this one; lots of little ups and downs that add up to a good workout. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.
April 8: Bolt Mountain
TH: Take I-5 north to exit 55 for US-199/Redwood Highway towards Ocean Beaches/Crescent City. Continue on 199 for 2.5 miles. Use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto OR-238 E and go 1.5 miles. Turn right onto New Hope Road. Go 3.2 miles. Turn right onto Fish Hatchery Road and go 1.8 Miles. Turn right onto Wetherbee Drive 0.7 of a mile until you reach Fish Hatchery County Park. Park at trail head. There is a pay station below and the cost is $5.00. There is also a port-a-potty. EDT:1 hour. Description: The trail has a good mix of smooth trail and rocky sections. The first 2 miles are the steepest part of the climb. After that it is smooth sailing to the top for the most part. About 1.5 miles up the trail you'll see a small spur trail leading off to the northeast (right). Make sure you stay left there and follow the main trail. There are great views of the valleys and mountains around the area from the top. Some wildflowers will also be blooming. Distance: 6.5-7 miles Elevation Gain: 1,300'. Weather forecast. April 15: Castle Crags to Indian Springs via the Flume Trail ( p. 214 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: South on I-5 to Exit 724, Castella. Right on Castle Creek Road to the state park entrance. Entrance fee is $7 per car for seniors. Park in the lot across from the entrance station behind the island. EDT: 75 minutes. We are going to take the Flume Trail up to the PCT and then the Crags Trail to the Indian Springs vista point below Castle Dome. After lunch we will go back down the Crags Trail to Bob's trail back to the cars. Distance: 9 miles; elevation gain about 2,000' Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles
April 22: Mule Mountain - Charley Buck to Baldy Peak
TH: Head south on Upper Applegate Road past the closed Country Club and turn left on Road 20 (Beaver Creek Road), the second left after the bridge. Follow Road 20 for 1.3 miles to the junction with FS 2000. Right on FS 2000 for 2.6 miles to the TH. EDT: 1 hour. Description: This is the new trail to Baldy Peak at the top of the Mule Mountain trail. It was created because a new owner on Upper Applegate Road decided to close the old Mule Mountain trail that crossed his property. It’s a steady up, but short (2 miles up and 1,800 vertical feet), with good views once out of the forest. Thus, a short but tough hike to help get those winter legs into summer shape. April 29: Enchanted Forest Trail to Tick Knoll (p. 3 Favorite Hikes of the Applegate)
TH: Thru Jacksonville and take Highway 238 towards Applegate for 15 miles. Just before downtown Applegate and the bridge, make a right onto North Applegate Road for 4.5 miles to a right on Kubli Road for 400' and then right on Slagle Creek Road for 1.5 miles to the pavement end at the TH. EDT: 60 minutes. Description: Take the Enchanted Forest trail up to our lunch spot on Tick Knoll for views of the Applegate Valley and the Red Buttes. Distance: 5 miles. Climbing: 1,800'.
