September 4: PCT from Cook & Green Pass to Lilly Pad Lake (p. 150 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T. Left on Elliot Creek Road / NF-1050 for 2.1 miles. Right on NF-1055 for 9.8 miles to the TH at Cook & Green Pass. High clearance vehicles recommended. EDT: 1:45. Description: We will be hiking on the PCT on the ridge above Echo Lake for a nice view down to the lake (AKA Sabin's View). Follow the PCT west along the crest with views of the Red Buttes, Mt. Shasta and the Klamath River Basin along with the Marble Mountains. Optional hike down and back to Towhead Lake which adds 2 miles and 600' of up to the hike. Return via the old mining road and Bee Camp Spring. Distance: 8.5 miles; elevation gain about 2,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.
September 11: Azalea Lake Pass above Azalea Lake (Red Buttes Wilderness - p. 154 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Go past the Applegate store, cross the bridge and head south on Thompson Creek Road for 11.9 miles to a left on Carberry Creek Road. Go 2.8 miles to the second right onto NF 1030. After crossing bridge make an immediate left and go 5.1 miles to a left onto NF 400. After 4.7 miles on NF 400 bear right at the fork and then continue left in 1/2 mile (i.e. do not go up NF 850) to the TH. EDT: 2 hours. Description: We are going to take a look at how this area is recovering from the Fort Complex fires in 2014. Distance 10 miles; elevation gain: 2,000'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.
September 18: Porcupine Lake via the PCT Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Take I-5 south to Exit 738, the Central Mount Shasta exit. Right on Hatchery Lane for 0.3 miles to a left on Old Stage Road for 0.3 miles. Straight on West A. Barr / NF 26 for 17 miles to the TH. (Note: there is a signed fork indicating Gumboot Lake in 0.5 miles to the left. Continue to the right, climbing up the cirque that contains Gumboot Lakes. The PCT Gumboot Trailhead and parking are located at the summit.) EDT: 1:45 Description: We will follow the PCT for 5.6 miles north from Gumboot Saddle, traversing the Eddy Range just below its crest most of the way. The route has spectacular views nearly the entire distance, including Mt. Shasta. Distance: 11.5 miles, elevation gain 1,300 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.
September 25: Seven Lakes Loop (p. 106 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM.
TH: Up I-5 to Highway 62 in Medford. Up Highway 62 for 14. 6 miles to the Butte Falls Road. Into Butte Falls and then right on Laurel Avenue for 0.2 miles and then left onto the Butte Falls Fish Lake road for 0.6 miles. Left on the Butte Falls Prospect Road for 8.8 miles and Right on Lodgepole Road 34 for 8.5 miles. Straight on 37 for 0.4 miles and then veer right onto gravel Road 3780 for 4.1 miles to the TH. EDT 2 hours. Description: Nice loop through the woods past lakes and ponds with lunch atop a ridge overlooking the Seven Lakes Basin. Distance: 10 miles; climbing: 2,000'. Weather Forecast.
