Wednesday Hike Schedule for October 2019

Leave from the Rite Aid parking lot on Ashland Street at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. October 2: Gumboot Saddle to Boulder Peak - Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Down I-5 to Exit 738, the Central Mount Shasta exit. Right on Hatchery Lane for 0.3 miles to a left on Old Stage Road for 0.3 miles. Straight on West A. Barr / NF 26 for 17 miles to the TH. EDT: 1:45. Description: Head down the PCT to the junction with the Seven Lakes trail. Follow the trail and the old Jeep road up past Helen Lake and then bushwhack across the ridge to Boulder Peak. Lunch on Boulder Peak with views of Shasta, Eddy and Lassen. Return the same way. Distance: 9 miles, Elevation gain: 2,300 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.

October 9: Stein Butte (p. 149 in 100 Hikes in Southern Oregon)
TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T, left on Elliot Creek Road for 0.9 mile and make a left just past the bridge into the parking area for the Seattle Bar TH. EDT 60 minutes. Description: Steady up to a ridge crest for spectacular views of the Siskiyous and then on to the Stein Butte summit, site of an old fire lookout. Distance 9 miles.  2,400' elevation gain.  Weather forecast. RT mileage 90 miles.

October 16: PCT - Castle Crags - North from Dog Creek to Sabin's Point Leave at 8:00. Hike leader: Nanci Cremer
TH: Head south on I-5 to the Castle Crags exit (724). Right on Castle Creek Road for 3.3 miles to the Dog Creek TH on the right at an old mine. EDT: 90 minutes. Description: Take the 4W18 spur trail 0.7 mile to its junction with the PCT. Left on the PCT and head north on the shoulder of Castle Crags above the North Fork of Castle Creek to Sabin's Point for lunch. Great views of the Crags and the canyon. Poles are useful on this hike. Distance: 10 miles. Elevation delta: 1,920'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.

October 23: PCT from Cook & Green Pass to Lilly Pad Lake (p. 150 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM Hike leader: Francie Skinner
TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T. Left on Elliot Creek Road / NF-1050 for 2.1 miles. Right on NF-1055 for 9.8 miles to the TH at Cook & Green Pass. High clearance vehicles recommended. EDT: 1:45. Description: We will be hiking on the PCT on the ridge above Echo Lake for a nice view down to the lake (AKA Sabin's View). Follow the PCT west along the crest with views of the Red Buttes, Mt. Shasta and the Klamath River Basin along with the Marble Mountains. Optional hike down and back to Towhead Lake which adds 2 miles and 600' of up to the hike. Return via the old mining road and Bee Camp Spring. Distance: 8.5 miles; elevation gain about 2,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.

October 30: Aspen Butte via the Hans Shortcut Route Hike leader Hans Kuhr
TH: Up DIM for 28 miles to a right onto Clover Creek Road. Drive 11 miles to the intersection of Forest Road 3828. Turn left on this road and park along the road. I will meet you there, coming from Klamath Falls. My expected meet up time is at 10 am. From there I will lead the group. We will drive north on FS 3828 for 7.5 miles on an excellent forest road, then turn left at the top of the hill and continue 0.5 miles on FS 760 to a parking area. This will be our trail head. EDT: 70 minutes. We will then hike through the open woods uphill for 1.2 miles to the caldera. Uphill elevation gain is 1,500 feet.  From the caldera, Aspen Butte is visible. We turn left and hike .25 miles to the summit of Aspen Butte. This takes around 1.5 hours. After lunch we return the same way to the trail-head. It takes the same time to go back down. Our total hiking and lunch time is 3.5 hrs . If you add all the time up, you should be back in Ashland by 3:30 PM. Please note that the usual round  trip distance and time from Clover Creek Trail Head to Aspen Butte summit is 11.2 miles and it takes all day. Distance: 3 miles round trip.
