November 6: Sky Lakes from the Cold Springs Trailhead (p 118 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:30 AM.
TH: Take DIM to 140, right (east) for 3.2 miles and then left (north) on 3651 for 10.1 miles to the TH at road end. EDT 75 minutes. Description: Loop trail into the Sky Lakes Wilderness passing a half dozen lakes. We are following the recovery of the forest after the 2017 fire. Distance: 8 miles, elevation gain 700 feet. November 13: Stein Butte (p. 149 in 100 Hikes in Southern Oregon) Hike leader: Mike Sanson
TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T, left on Elliot Creek Road for 0.9 mile and make a left just past the bridge into the parking area for the Seattle Bar TH. EDT 60 minutes. Description: Steady up to a ridge crest for spectacular views of the Siskiyous and then on to the Stein Butte summit, site of an old fire lookout. Distance 9 miles. 2,400' elevation gain. Weather forecast. RT mileage 90 miles.
November 20: High Lakes Trail (p. 122 in Hiking Southern Oregon)
TH: Left out of Rite Aid to a left on DIM for 21.6 miles to a left on NF-37 / Big Elk Road. Up NF-37 for 7.6 miles to the TH by Little Butte Creek on the right at the North Fork Campground. Leave hikers here and then position a shuttle car at the High Lakes TH by continuing up to Highway 140, then right for 7.1 miles to a right at the brown BROWN MTN. Trails sign. After 1.000’ turn left towards NF-3640 for 500’ then a right towards NF-3640 for 1,000’ and then a left onto NF-3640 for 500’ to the parking area at the High Lakes TH. EDT: 1 hour. After the hike, return to Ashland via the Westside Road / NF-3601 back to DIM. Description: Follow the trail along Little Butte Creek (part of the Medford Irrigation District) up to the dam and turn left onto the High Lakes Trail. Follow the High Lakes trail past Fish Lake and across the Brown Mountain Lava flow back to the shuttle car. Distance: 9.3 miles; elevation gain 900'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
November 27: Pilot Rock Road to Porcupine Mountain.
TH: Take Mt Ashland exit 6 off I-5; follow old Highway 99 under the freeway for just a little over 2 miles; go left onto Pilot Rock Road and drive one mile to first crossing of PCT at the power line; EDT: 30 minutes. Description: Hike east on the PCT past Pilot Rock to the top of Porcupine Mountain; return via the trail and road. Distance: about 7.5 miles; elevation gain: about 2,000 ft. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles.
