November 6: East Boulder Lake - (p. 232 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM Hike leader: Francie Skinner
TH: South on I-5 to Yreka Exit 773 and take Highway 3 for 39 miles through Fort Jones and Etna to Callahan. Right in Callahan (behind the Emporium Saloon) on South Fork Road for 0.7 miles then straight on McKeen Road (40N17) for 2.3 miles to the McKeen Divide. Left (SE) on 39N63 (Boulder) for 2.9 miles, left on 39N10 for 1.2 miles and right (SE but not a uey) on 39N63 for 0.6 miles to the 4 car parking area on the left just before the TH. EDT: 2 hours (it used to be 1:45 but McKeen and Boulder roads have deteriorated considerably since 2018). Beautiful hike in the Scott Mountains of the Trinity Alps Wilderness past East Boulder Lake and several smaller alpine lakes / ponds up to the ridge with views of Craggy Peak, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Eddy, Scott Valley and the Russian Wilderness. Distance: 9 miles. Climbing: 2,500'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 170 miles.
November 13: Sky Lakes from the Cold Springs Trailhead (p 118 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:30 AM. Hike Leader: John Kerr
TH: Take DIM to 140, right (east) for 3.2 miles and then left (north) on 3651 for 10.1 miles to the TH at road end. EDT 75 minutes. Description: Loop trail into the Sky Lakes Wilderness passing a half dozen lakes. We are following the recovery of the forest after the 2017 fire. Distance: 8 miles, elevation gain 700 feet. November 20: High Lakes Trail (p. 122 in Hiking Southern Oregon) High Leader: Dan Stubblefield
TH: Left out of Rite Aid to a left on DIM for 21.6 miles to a left on NF-37 / Big Elk Road at Deadwood. Up NF-37 for 7.6 miles to the TH by Little Butte Creek on the right at the North Fork Campground. Leave the hikers here. Either use a shuttle car or position enough cars to return the hikers from the High Lakes TH to the North Fork Campground at the end of the hike. Shuttle car or cars continue up to Highway 140, then right for 7.1 miles to a right at the brown BROWN MTN. Trails sign. After 0.2 mile continue straight for 0.3 mile to a left onto NF-3640 for 500’ to the parking area at the High Lakes TH. EDT: 1 hour. After the hike, return to Ashland via the Westside Road / NF-3601 back to DIM. Description: Follow the trail along Little Butte Creek (part of the Medford Irrigation District) up to the dam and turn left onto the High Lakes Trail. Optional side trip to the Fish Lake SNOTEL approximately 200' off the trail near the dam. Follow the High Lakes trail past Fish Lake and across the Brown Mountain Lava flow back to the shuttle car. Distance: 9.3 miles; elevation gain 900'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
