June 5: PCT from Greensprings Summit to Hobart Bluff (p. 130 in 101 Hikes)
TH: Drive Highway 66 14.5 miles to PCT crossing at Greensprings Summit. EDT: 45 minutes. Description: Follow the PCT for 3.3 miles through the woods and along the crest to the "Hobart Bluff Viewpoint" sign; turn right 0.3 miles to top of bluff; enjoy 360 degree views and lunch before returning the same way. Distance: 7+ miles; elevation gain: 2,000 feet of climbing; Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 35 miles.
June 12: Duck Lakes Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Down I-5 to the Fort Jones/Etna exit (Exit 773). Follow SR 3 for 31 miles and turn right onto French Creek Road (between Etna and Callahan). Follow this paved road for 6.8 miles and turn right at the T onto dirt road FS 40N22 for 0.7 miles to a bear right onto High C Road for 1.3 miles to the TH on the left. EDT: 90 minutes. Description: At 26 acres, Big Duck Lake is the largest lake in the Russian Wilderness. It is 27 feet deep and at 6,400 feet elevation. Little Duck Lake is a gem of a lake up against a massive cirque. The trail is a combination of long ago abandoned logging roads and single track trails. Distance: 9 miles if we do both lakes. Elevation gain: 2,700'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 160 miles.
June 19: Cement Bluff and Bluff Lake - The Trinity Divide Leave at 8:00 AM.
TH: Drive south on I-5 and take Stewart Springs Road exit (about 1.5 miles after passing rest area next to Weed); turn right at both stop signs, then left onto Stewart Springs Road; after 4 miles, turn right onto Road 17 for 9.3 miles to the upper / PCT TH. Description: Instead of heading east from the TH to Mt. Eddy we are going to head west and follow the PCT along the ridge above High Camp Creek Basin over to Cement Bluff. Nice views of the Scott Mountains, Mt. Shasta and Mt. Eddy. Distance: 10 miles; elevation gain: 1,000 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.
June 26: Grizzly Peak and Lost Creek Falls
TH: Drive Dead Indian Memorial Highway 7 miles; turn left on Shale City Road and follow Grizzly Peak Trail signs: 3 miles on pavement, 2 miles on dirt. EDT: 30 min Description: spring flowers should be in full bloom; great views over the Rogue Valley. Distance: 5 miles; elevation gain: 1,200 feet. Plus an extra; after returning to the cars we will head to nearby Lost Creek Falls. To get to Lost Creek Falls return to the Shale City Road and make a left for an additional 2.7 miles, staying right at the Lake Creek and big COW signs at 1.1 miles, then stay left on paved road for 1.3 miles, then left on dirt road for 0.4 miles (ignore road 37-2E-1), and one more left on road 37-2E-13 for 1 mile to parking area on the left. If you go too far you will soon hit a closed gate. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 50 miles.
