Leave from the Rite Aid parking lot on Ashland Street at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. January 2: Ostrich Peak Loop
TH: park at gate about 100 yards up Hitt Road, off Strawberry Lane.
Description: Full loop going counterclockwise around Ostrich Peak; exact route varies from year to year; snow is possible on higher sections of trail. Distance: 8 miles RT; total elevation gain: 2,250 feet.  Weather forecast. RT mileage: 10 miles.

January 9: Bull Gap Loop - Snowshoe Trip.
TH: Take Highway I-5 South to Exit 6, the Mt. Ashland ski road. Up the ski road to the Bull Gap turn off.  Sno-Park permit required; passengers should help pay for it.. EDT: 30 minutes. Description: We are going to do a loop; out on the Bull Gap Road, down the PCT and back via an old logging road and the Bull Gap Road. We should be done early, so plan to have lunch at an Ashland restaurant of the group's choice.  Distance: 3.5 miles; elevation gain: 650 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles.

January 16:  Sterling Mine Trail - Bear Gulch TH to Little Applegate TH (p. 144 in 100 Hikes)
TH: Head up I-5 to exit 24, Phoenix. Left into Phoenix and then right on OR-99. In 1.4 miles turn left onto South Stage Road for 3.4 miles. Left on Griffin Creek Road for 1.2 miles to a right on West Griffin Creek Road for 2.9 miles to a continue straight on Poormans Creek Road for 1.1 miles. Left at the T onto Sterling Creek Road for 9.5 miles. In Buncom turn left for 15 miles on to Little Applegate Road to the Little Applegate TH. Drop the hikers here and continue another 2.4 miles to leave a shuttle car at the Little Applegate TH. Return the drivers using a shuttle car to the Bear Gulch TH to begin the hike. EDT: 1 hour. Description: Trail starts out uphill, finishes downhill. Good views of the Siskiyous to the south and coastal ranges to the west; Distance: 8.2 miles; elevation gain: 1,100 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 80 miles.

January 23: East Applegate Ridge
TH: Head up I-5 to exit 24, Phoenix. Left into Phoenix and then right on OR-99. Turn left onto Stage Road then for left on Griffin Lane.  In about a mile turn right onto West Griffin Creek Road for 2.9 miles which becomes Poormans Creek Road for another 1.1 miles to a T junction and left onto Sterling Creek Road. Go 4 miles to the 4 mile marker and the trail is well marked 100 feet past the sign. The Trail is 5.5 miles long and can be a return trip or a turnaround earlier. 2,100 feet total ascent for return trip. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 70 miles

January 30: Lost Creek Lake (west shore) (p. 82 in 100 Hikes)
TH: Take Highway 62 to Lost Creek Lake and turn left onto Takelma Road at "Fish Hatchery" sign; drive past fish hatchery, power plant and dam to the turn to the boat ramp at 2.2 miles from Highway 62. Continue 0.4 miles to the boat ramp parking lot / TH. EDT: 75 minutes. Description: follow Lost Creek Lake trail to our usual lunch bench; return the same way Distance: 9.6 miles; elevation gain: about 1,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
