September 2: Siskiyou Peak
TH: Take Mt. Ashland exit 6 off I-5; turn right on Mount Ashland Ski Road to the end of the ski area and the paved area, then turn left from NF-20 on the first dirt forest road and drop down ¼ mile to the PCT crossing which will be the TH. EDT: 35 minutes. Description: Follow the PCT 3.7 miles. Before the PCT starts to descend near the trail summit, turn left and walk up through the field and up further to the summit of Siskiyou Peak for lunch. Return same way. Hiking distance: 7.4 miles RT; elevation gain of 1,500 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 50 miles.
September 9: Enchanted Forest and Felton Memorial Trails
TH: Thru Jacksonville and take Highway 238 towards Applegate for 15 miles. Just before downtown Applegate and the bridge, make a right onto North Applegate Road for 4.5 miles to a right on Kubli Road for 400' and then right on Slagle Creek Road for 1.5 miles to the pavement end at the TH. EDT: 60 minutes. Description: Take the Enchanted Forest trail about 0.8 miles to a signed right over to the Felton Memorial. The memorial honors 3 men killed in a timber related helicopter crash in 1993. Distance: 5 miles. Climbing: 600'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 80 miles.
September 16: East Applegate Ridge
TH: Head up I-5 to exit 24, Phoenix. Left into Phoenix and then right on OR-99. Turn left onto Stage Road then left on Griffin Lane. In about a mile turn right onto West Griffin Creek Road for 2.9 miles which becomes Poormans Creek Road for another 1.1 miles to a T junction and left onto Sterling Creek Road. Go 4 miles to the 4 mile marker and the trail is well marked 100 feet past the sign. Description: The Trail is 5.5 miles long and can be a return trip or a turnaround earlier. 2,100' total ascent for return trip. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 65 miles
September 23: Sky Lakes from the Cold Springs Trailhead (p 118 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:30 AM.
TH: Take DIM to 140, right (east) for 3.2 miles and then left (north) on FS 3651 for 10.1 miles to the TH at road end. EDT 75 minutes. Description: Loop trail into the Sky Lakes Wilderness passing a half dozen lakes. The hike follows the Cold Springs, Isherwood, Sky Lakes and Rocky Creek Trails in a clockwise direction. Distance: 7.1 miles, elevation gain 700 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 110 miles.
September 30: Greenstone TH to Anderson Ridge TH. Jack-Ash Trail. Hike Leader: Rich Stickle
TH: I-5 to Phoenix Exit and left to Highway 99. Turn right and proceed to Stage Road and go left. Continue on Stage Road to the end and turn left at the T junction on Griffen Lane. Drive past the school and go straight past both Pioneer Road and Griffen Creek Road, continuing straight for about 2 miles until you see a left marked Griffen Creek Road (confusing but correct). Left onto the paved Griffen Creek Road and it will soon turn into the paved Anderson Butte Road which continues about 5 miles up to 4,500 feet elevation. The pavement ends and there is a sign on the right marked Griffen TH. Continue straight on FS Rd 39-2-8. Do not go left on Anderson Butte Road. In one mile you will come to a big pile of dirt on the right and Greenstone TH markers across the road on the hill. EDT: 45 minutes. Description: The trail ascends through old growth forest to the ridge and along the ridge another 2 miles to Anderson Ridge TH. Distance 6.4 miles. Approximately 1,000 feet of climb.
