June 3: Lost Creek Falls and Grizzly Peak Hike Leader: Rich Stickle
TH: Left on Highway 66 for 0.8 miles to a left onto Dead Indian Memorial Highway for 6.7 miles to a left onto Shale City Road and follow the Grizzly Peak Trail signs: 3 miles on pavement, 2 miles on dirt. EDT: 30 minutes. Description: spring flowers should be in full bloom; great views over the Rogue Valley. Distance: 5 miles; elevation gain: 1,200 ft. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles.
June 10: Big Red Mountain:
TH: From Talent on Highway 99 take a left on Rapp Road and follow Rapp which turns into Wagner Creek Road for 8 miles to a left to remain on Wagner Creek Road which becomes Wagner Gap Road / FS-22. Continue on another 10 miles (18 miles total from the turn off of Highway 99) to the junction with FS-20. Right on FS-20 for 0.8 miles to the Siskiyou Gap TH and parking in the clearing on the right. Description: The PCT winds around Big Red Mountain through cool woods and along some cliffs with a good trail. Lots of views. Near the high point before the trail heads down, turn left on a gentle slope through fields to the top of Big Red Mountain. Lunch on rocks with 360 degree view after touring the summit. Distance 6 miles. Elevation gain 1,200 feet. Weather forecast. Driving Mileage: 60 miles.
June 17th. Azalea Lake Hike. Leave at 8:30 AM.
TH: Take Hwy 238 from Jacksonville to Thomson Rd (13 miles). Turn left and go 13 miles on pavement to where it becomes Carberry Creek Road. After 3 miles of dirt road turn right on Rd 1030, then 5 miles later turn left on Rd 400. There will be a sign pointing left for Fir Glade. In 4 1/2 miles Rd 400 continues straight as 1040/700. In another 1/4 mile Rd 850 (a bit rough) turns right up the hill (There is a blank sign the shape of a little house). 850 ends in 1/4 mile at a large trailhead parking area. The 955 trail goes straight past Fir Glade to an intersection with trail 906 about 2 miles out. 906 goes right to Sucker Gap. Continue straight on 955 2 1/2 miles to Azalea lake. Distance 10 miles. Moderate elevation change. Weather forecast. RT mileage 120 miles.
