September 5: Hidden Valley - Mt. Shasta Meet at 8:00 AM
TH: Take the first Mt. Shasta Exit (mile 740). East on Mt. Shasta Boulevard. to the first left and then right on Ski Village Drive over to a left onto Everitt Memorial Highway up to Bunny Flat. EDT: 90 min; Description: Hike up to Horse Camp and the Sierra Club lodge to pick up the Mt. Shasta Circumnavigation Trail. From there head up sandy forested slopes to the pinnacle overlooking Hidden Valley and the high mountain grandeur of Shasta and Shastina. Poles are useful on this hike because much of the trail above Horse Camp is over boulders and scree. 6 miles, 2,300 feet of climbing. Weather forecast. RT mileage 170 miles.
September 12: Azalea Lake Pass above Azalea Lake (Red Buttes Wilderness - p. 154 in 100 Hikes) Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Go past the Applegate store, cross the bridge and head south on Thompson Creek Road for 11.9 miles to a left on Carberry Creek Road. Go 2.8 miles to the second right onto NF 1030. After crossing bridge make an immediate left and go 5.1 miles to a left onto NF 400. After 4.7 miles on NF 400 bear right at the fork and then continue left in 1/2 mile (i.e. do not go up NF 850) to the TH. EDT: 2 hours. Description: We are going to take a look at what the Fort Complex fires did to this area last summer. Distance 10 miles; elevation gain: 2,000'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.
September 19: Porcupine Lake via the PCT Leave at 8:00 AM
TH: Take I-5 south to Exit 738, the Central Mount Shasta exit. Right on Hatchery Lane for 0.3 miles to a left on Old Stage Road for 0.3 miles. Straight on West A. Barr / NF 26 for 16 miles to a right on 40N26 for 0.7 miles the TH (the turn onto 40N26 is about 1.6 miles past the turn on the left to Gumboot Lake). If you get to the Gumboot TH you have gone too far. EDT: 2 hours. Description: We will follow the PCT north for 5 miles to Porcupine Lake traversing the Eddy Range just below its crest most of the way. The route has spectacular views nearly the entire distance, including Mt. Shasta. Distance: 10 miles, elevation gain 1,600 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.
September 26: Seven Lakes Loop (p. 106 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:00 AM.
TH: Up I-5 to Highway 62 in Medford. Up Highway 62 for 14. 6 miles to the Butte Falls Road. Into Butte Falls and then right on Laurel Avenue for 0.2 miles and then left onto the Butte Falls Fish Lake road for 0.6 miles. Left on the Butte Falls Prospect Road for 8.8 miles and Right on Lodgepole Road 34 for 8.5 miles. Straight on 37 for 0.4 miles and then veer right onto gravel Road 3780 for 4.1 miles to the TH. EDT 2 hours. Description: Nice loop through the woods past lakes and ponds with lunch atop a ridge overlooking the Seven Lakes Basin. Distance: 10 miles; climbing: 2,000'. Weather Forecast. RT mileage 150 miles.
