November 7: Nannie Creek Trail to Puck Lakes (P. 128 in 100 hikes in Southern Oregon) New Hike Hike leader: Francie Skinner Leave at 8:30 AM.
TH: From Rite Aid take DIM to Highway 140 turn right for 5.9 miles. Turn left onto Volcanic Scenic Highway / West Side Road for 12.9 miles. Turn left on NF3484 (may be signed 3584) go 5.3 miles to the Nannie Creek TH sign. EDT: 1:30. Description: An easier hike along a nicely graded trail to a turn off to Puck Lakes. Puck lake is at 6,450 feet making it one of the highest lakes in the Sky Lakes Wilderness. The trail will continue around to Little Puck Lake where we will stop for lunch. Afterwards, we will continue around Big Puck Lake on a lesser marked trail and through a dried up bog. Then we will connect back on the Nannie Creek Trail and head back. Distance: 6+ miles Elevation gain approximately 1,000 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.
November 14: Stein Butte (p. 149 in 100 Hikes in Southern Oregon) Hike leader: Mike Sanson
TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T, left on Elliot Creek Road for 0.9 mile and make a left just past the bridge into the parking area for the Seattle Bar TH. EDT 60 minutes. Description: Steady up to a ridge crest for spectacular views of the Siskiyous and then on to the Stein Butte summit, site of an old fire lookout. Distance 9 miles. 2,400' elevation gain. Weather forecast. RT mileage 90 miles.
November 21: High Lakes Trail (p. 122 in Hiking Southern Oregon) Hike leader: Denise Tschann
TH: Left out of Rite Aid to a left on DIM for 21.6 miles to a left on NF-37 / Big Elk Road. Up NF-37 for 7.6 miles to the TH by Little Butte Creek on the right at the North Fork Campground. Leave hikers here and then position a shuttle car at the High Lakes TH by continuing up to Highway 140, then right for 7.1 miles to a right at the brown BROWN MTN. Trails sign. After 1.000’ turn left towards NF-3640 for 500’ then a right towards NF-3640 for 1,000’ and then a left onto NF-3640 for 500’ to the parking area at the High Lakes TH. EDT: 1 hour. After the hike, return to Ashland via the Westside Road / NF-3601 back to DIM. Description: Follow the trail along Little Butte Creek (part of the Medford Irrigation District) up to the dam and turn left onto the High Lakes Trail. Follow the High Lakes trail past Fish Lake and across the Brown Mountain Lava flow back to the shuttle car. Distance: 9.3 miles; elevation gain 900'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
November 28: Pilot Rock Road to Porcupine Mountain.
TH: Take Mt Ashland exit 6 off I-5; follow old Highway 99 under the freeway for just a little over 2 miles; go left onto Pilot Rock Road and drive one mile to first crossing of PCT at the power line; EDT: 30 minutes. Description: Hike east on the PCT past Pilot Rock to the top of Porcupine Mountain; return via the trail and road. Distance: about 7.5 miles; elevation gain: about 2,000 ft. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles.
