March 2: Castle Crags to Castle Dome (p. 214 in 100 Hikes). Meet at 8:00 AM
TH: South on I-5 to Exit 724, Castella. Right on Castle Creek Road to the state park entrance. Entrance fee is $7 per car for seniors. Continue on 2.1 miles to the Vista Point TH. EDT: 90 minutes. Description: We tried to do this hike last March but were thwarted by park fuel reduction work which had closed the Vista Point Road. Before heading up the Crags Trail to Castle Dome with views of the Crags and Mt. Shasta check out the short side trail over to Vista Point just off the parking lot. Distance: 6 miles; elevation change: 2,200 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.
March 9: Collings Mountain - Applegate Lake (p.146 in 100 Hikes).
TH: Proceed through Jacksonville on Highway 238 to Ruch. Left on Upper Applegate Road for 16 miles to the Hart-Tish TH where we drop the shuttle car; park on the west side of the road by the guardrail. Continue south along the lake for another 2.5 miles to the Watkins TH. EDT: 75 minutes. Description: woodsy trail with excellent views. Distance: 7 miles; climbing: 2,500 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 90 miles.
March 16: Snowshoe trip: Mt Ashland Ski Area to Grouse Gap
TH: Closed gate on FS Road 20, just beyond the Mt Ashland Ski Area parking lot; Sno-Park permit required for drivers; passengers should help pay for it. EDT: 30 minutes. Description: We are going to end our snowshoe season with an easy loop on the backside of Mt. Ashland. From the ski area back parking lot take FS 20 to where it forks with the service road to the Mt. Ashland summit. Head up the service road to the ridge and then follow the ridge past Rabbit Ears. Follow the contour over to where it drops down to the Grouse Gap road and head to the Grouse Gap shelter for lunch. Return via FS 20. Distance: 5.5 miles; elevation gain: around 600 feet. Big Red SNOTEL. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 45 miles.
March 23: Mule Mountain Trail to Baldy Peak (Applegate Valley) (p.228 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:30 AM
TH: Head south from Jacksonville on Highway 238 and make a left at Ruch onto Upper Applegate Road. The TH is on the left hand side of Upper Applegate Road, just past the 12 mile marker (5.5 miles beyond the Star Ranger Station); park off pavement wherever you can; EDT: 60 minutes Description: Lovely trail that winds its way unremittingly up the hillsides above the Applegate Valley. Distance: 8 miles RT; elevation gain: 3,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 80 miles.
March 30: Lost Creek Lake (North Shore) (p.82 in 100 Hikes)
TH: Drive across the high bridge on the north side of Lost Creek Lake and make an immediate left on Lewis Road and continue for 1 mile to the TH; EDT: 60 minutes. Description: "generally level", pretty trail through the woods along the north shore of Lost Creek Lake past the spur to the Blue Grotto and on to our usual lunch spot at the bench below a rock outcrop overlooking the lake; return the same way. Distance: about 10 miles RT; 900 feet of up. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
