June 1: PCT from Old 99 to Pilot Rock Hike leader: Gary Swanson
TH: Take I-5 to the Mt. Ashland exit. Proceed under I-5 to the PCT crossing. EDT: 30 min. Description: follow the PCT towards Pilot Rock and return the same way. Climbing Pilot Rock is optional. Distance 9 miles; climbing 1,500 feet (add 500 feet for a successful Pilot Rock summit). Weather forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles
June 8: Stein Butte (p. 149 in 100 Hikes) Hike Canceled
TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T, left on Elliot Creek Road for 0.9 mile and make a left just past the bridge into the parking area for the Seattle Bar TH. EDT 60 minutes. Description: Steady up to a ridge crest for spectacular views of the Siskiyous and then on to the Stein Butte summit, site of an old fire lookout. Distance 9 miles. 2,400' elevation gain. Weather forecast. RT mileage 90 miles.
June 15: Hyatt Lake to Greensprings Summit
TH: Take Highway 66 to Greensprings Summit and leave a shuttle car. Continue on to the Greensprings Inn and make a left and go 3 miles to the PCT crossing. EDT: 45 minutes.
Description: Walk along the PCT thru flower-filled woods and meadows. The Hiking Group started out with an abbreviated version of this hike on June 27, 2001.
Distance: 7.5 miles; elevation gain: 1100 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 45 miles.
June 22: Horse Camp Trail to Echo Lake (p. 121 in Favorite Hikes of the Applegate) Meet at 8:00 AM
TH: Past Applegate Lake to T and left on Elliot Creek Road for 1.5 miles to the junction of FS 1040 and FS 1050. Hard right on FS 1040 then 3.9 miles to TH on left. EDT: 1:35. Description: A steady climb through a shaded deciduous and mixed conifer forest past the Butte Fork landslide, Horse Camp and on up to Echo Lake. This is a strenuous hike because of the elevation gain, but we all really like it and the payoff of getting to the lake is worth the effort of getting there. Distance: 9 miles; elevation gain 3,000 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles.
June 29: PCT from Cook & Green Pass to Lilly Pad Lake (p. 150 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:00 AM
TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T. Left on Elliot Creek Road / NF-1050 for 2.1 miles. Right on NF-1055 for 9.8 miles to the TH at Cook & Green Pass. High clearance vehicles recommended. EDT: 1:45. Description: Follow the PCT west along the crest with views of the Red Buttes, Mt. Shasta and the Klamath River Basin along with the Marble Mountains. Return via the old mining road and Bee Camp Spring. Distance: 8.5 miles; elevation gain about 2,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 110 miles
