August 1: Gumboot Saddle to Devil’s Crest - 8 AM departure
This new hike for Monday is well worth the drive. Moderate hike with fabulous views. TH: Down I-5 to Exit 38, Central Mount Shasta. Right on Hatchery lane .3 miles then left on Old Stage Rd for .3 miles. Right on West Barr/ NF 26 for 18 miles. PCT TH is at left across from parking at summit of crest. Good paved roads. 4 mile hike along saddle with views of several lakes, then lunch overlooking Devil’s Pocket with huge views of Shasta, Lassen and Eddie. Moderate hike. Distance 8 miles. August 8: High Lakes Trail from Aspen Point to Summit Snow Park (100 Hikes, p. 128 Hike Leader: Elizabeth Zinser
TH: Drive DIM 22 miles to FS 37; turn left 8 miles to Hwy 140; turn right 5 miles to Summit Sno-Park and leave shuttle car; drive Hwy. 140 to Aspen Point. EDT: 90 min.
Description: walk thru woods along Lake of the Woods to PCT crossing; turn right (north) onto PCT; cross Hwy. 140; continue on PCT to Summit Snow Park.
Distance: 7 miles; elevation gain: 500 ft. Weather forecast. RT driving mileage: 80 miles.
August 15: PCT from Grouse Gap to Siskiyou Peak – Hike Leader: Sabin Phelps
TH: Take Mt. Ashland exit 6 off I-5; Follow Mount Ashland Ski Road to Grouse Gap. Instead of turning left to the shelter, park the cars and use the PCT route up to Siskiyou Peak. Before the PCT starts to descend near the summit, turn left through the field and up to the summit. Fabulous views for lunch. Moderate hike. Weather forecast. Return driving mileage 70 miles.
August 22: PCT over Brown Mountain Lava Flow RT (100 Hikes, p. 130
TH: Take Dead Indian Memorial Rd 22 miles to Forest Service Road 37; go left on FS 37 8 miles to Hwy. 140; turn right (east) onto Hwy. 140; after 4.2 miles turn left into the Summit parking area; toilets available. EDT: 60 min.
Hike description: hike well-built trail thru forest and over basalt rock deposited by Brown Mt. lava flow to high point of trail; return same way.
Distance: 5.8 miles RT; elevation gain: 550 feet. Weather forecast. RT driving mileage: 70 miles
August 29: East Boulder Lake - (p. 232 in 100 Hikes) New hike. Meet at 8:00 AM. At Rite Aid
TH: South on I-5 to Yreka Exit 773 and take Highway 3 for 39 miles through Fort Jones and Etna to Callahan. Right in Callahan (behind the Emporium Saloon) on South Fork Road for 0.7 miles then straight on McKeen Road (40N17) for 2.3 miles to the McKeen Divide. Left (SE) on 39N63 (Boulder) for 2.9 miles, left on 39N10 for 1.2 miles and right (SE but not a uey) on 39N66 for 0.8 miles to the TH. EDT: 1:45. Beautiful hike in the Scott Mountains of the Trinity Alps Wilderness past East Boulder Lake and several smaller alpine lakes / ponds up to the ridge with views of Craggy Peak, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Eddy, Scott Valley and the Russian Wilderness. Distance: 7 miles. Climbing: 1,500'. There is an option to do the complete 9 mile loop with 2,500' of up. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.
