Wednesday Hike Schedule for March 2015

Leave from the Safeway parking lot in Ashland at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. March 4: Castle Crags to Castle Dome (p. 214 in 100 Hikes).
TH: South on I-5 to Exit 724, Castella. Right on Castle Creek Road to the state park entrance. Entrance fee is $8 per car for seniors. Continue on 2.1 miles to the Vista Point TH. EDT: 90 minutes. Description: We haven't done this one since 2007. Head up the Crags Trail to Castle Dome with views of the Crags and Mt. Shasta. On the way up check out the short side trail over to Indian Springs. Distance: 6 miles; elevation change: 2,200 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.

March 11: Collings Mountain - Applegate Lake (p.146 in 100 Hikes).
TH: Proceed through Jacksonville on Highway 238 to Ruch. Left on Upper Applegate Road for 16 miles to the Hart-Tish TH where we drop the shuttle car; park on the west side of the road by the guardrail. Continue south along the lake for another 2.5 miles to the Watkins TH. EDT: 75 minutes. Description: woodsy trail with excellent views. Distance: 7 miles; climbing: 2,500 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 90 miles.

March 18: Mule Mountain Trail to Baldy Peak (Applegate Valley) (p.228 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:30 AM
TH: Head south from Jacksonville on Highway 238 and make a left at Ruch onto Upper Applegate Road. The TH is on the left hand side of Upper Applegate Road, just past the 12 mile marker (5.5 miles beyond the Star Ranger Station); park off pavement wherever you can; EDT: 60 minutes Description: Lovely trail that winds its way unremittingly up the hillsides above the Applegate Valley. Distance: 8 miles RT; elevation gain: 3,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 80 miles.

March 25: Crater Lake Snowshoe - Leave Safeway at 8:00 AM
TH: Rim Village Cafe parking lot, Crater Lake NP; EDT: 2 hours. Description: Follow the rim of the lake in a clockwise direction for splendid views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Return the same way. Don't forget your sunglasses and sun block. Distance: 5 miles RT; elevation gain: 200-300 feet. Annie Springs SNOTEL. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 190 miles.
