July 1: Abbott Butte (p. 89 in 100 Hikes) - Meet 8:00 AM Hike Leader: Keeley Kirkendal
TH: Take Highway 62 towards Crater Lake past the 51 mile marker; turn left onto Woodruff Meadows Road #68 12.8 miles (last 7.7 mi are one-lane gravel); EDT: 105 minutes. Description: pleasant woods and flower-filled meadows, great views on the way to lunch below the abandoned lookout tower on top of Abbott Butte; return the same way RT: distance: 7.5 miles; elevation gain: 1,800 feet. July 8: Mt. Eddy (opposite Mt Shasta in California) (p. 210 in 100 Hikes) - Meet 8:00 AM. Hike Leader: Keeley Kirkendal
TH: Drive south on I-5 and take Stewart Springs Road exit (about 1.5 miles after passing rest area next to Weed); turn right at both stop signs, then left onto Stewart Springs Road; after 4 miles, turn right onto Road 17 for 9.3 miles to the upper / PCT TH. Drop the hikers here and then position a shuttle car 1.3 miles further on down the road at the hairpin curve at the lower TH. EDT: 105 minutes. Description: Wildflower heaven, inviting lakes, spectacular views of Mt Shasta; alternate turn around point is the ridge top before the long, barren slog to the summit. Distance: 10 miles; elevation gain to summit 2,200 feet, to ridge 1,400 ft. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 165 miles.
July 15: Upper Rogue Canyon- Highway 230 to Road 6530 (p. 100 in 100 Hikes) Meet 8:30 AM Hike Leader: Hank Morgan
TH: Take Highway 62 past Union Creek and continue on Highway 230. At Hamaker Campground just past mile 12 turn right on gravel road 6530 for 0.5 mile then left at fork to stay on Road 6530 for another 0.2 mile and leave shuttle car at Upper Rogue River Trail sign on left. Then back to Highway 230 and go north for 6.4 miles to the Crater Rim Viewpoint parking lot for the upper TH. EDT 2 hours. Description: This is one of the most scenic sections of the Rogue River. Follow the river along a 200 foot deep canyon back to the shuttle car. Insect repellent may prove useful for this hike. Distance 9 miles. Generally downhill. Weather forecast. RT mileage 170 miles.
July 22: East Boulder Lake - (p. 232 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:00 AM. Hike Leader: Keeley Kirkendal
TH: South on I-5 to Yreka Exit 773 and take Highway 3 for 39 miles through Fort Jones and Etna to Callahan. Right in Callahan (behind the Emporium Saloon) on South Fork Road for 0.7 miles then straight on McKeen Road (40N17) for 2.3 miles to the McKeen Divide. Left (SE) on 39N63 (Boulder) for 2.9 miles, left on 39N10 for 1.2 miles and right (SE but not a uey) on 39N66 for 0.8 miles to the TH. EDT: 2 hours. Description: We liked this one so much last year that we are going to do it again but in a counterclockwise direction. Beautiful hike in the Scott Mountains of the Trinity Alps Wilderness past East Boulder Lake and several smaller alpine lakes / ponds with views of Craggy Peak, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Eddy, Scott Valley and the Russian Wilderness. Distance: 9 miles. Climbing: 2,500'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.
July 29: Wagner Butte (p. 140 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:00 AM. Hike Leader: Keeley Kirkendal
TH: From Talent make a left onto Rapp Road and continue on to Wagner Creek Road. From the start of gravel continue 2.3 miles to a left to stay on Wagner Creek Road. Continue another 3.6 miles, making a left after crossing the cattle grate, to the TH. EDT: 45 minutes.
Description: uphill most of the way, but great flower displays and spectacular panoramic views from the top.
