January 7: Ostrich Peak Loop
TH: park at gate about 100 yards up Hitt Road, off Strawberry Lane.
Description: Full loop going counterclockwise around Ostrich Peak; exact route varies from year to year; snow is possible on higher sections of trail. Distance: 8 miles RT; total elevation gain: 2,250 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 3 miles
January 14: William L. Jess Dam Borrow Pit and Viewpoint Mike Kinda new hike. Leader: Beverly David
TH: From Medford continue on Highway 62 for 2.2 miles past the turn off to the Lost Creek Lake fish hatchery to leave the hikers at the gated entrance to the borrow pit TH on the right. After dropping the hikers, return 2 miles to leave a shuttle car at the Viewpoint Mike TH parking area on Crowfoot Road just east of Highway 62. EDT: 60 minutes. Description: Beverly has volunteered to introduce us to the exciting Lost Creek Lake Dam borrow pit. After exploring the borrow pit we will take the deer trail up to the ridge and from there follow the old road through the woods to Viewpoint Mike and then down to the Crowfoot Road TH. Distance: 5 miles; elevation gain: 1,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles
January 21: Pilot Rock Road to Porcupine Mountain.
TH: Take Mt Ashland exit 6 off I-5; follow old Highway 99 under the freeway for just a little over 2 miles; go left onto Pilot Rock Road and drive one mile to first crossing of PCT at the power line; EDT: 30 minutes. Description: Hike east on the PCT past Pilot Rock to the top of Porcupine Mountain; return via the trail and road. Distance: about 7.5 miles; elevation gain: about 1,700 ft. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles.
January 28: Keno Access Road to Old Baldy Lookout on the PCT
TH: Take DIM to the Lilyglen horse campground. Right on the paved Keno Access Road (which is just past the Wilderness Trails Youth Camp sign) for 5.2 miles to the PCT crossing. EDT: 45 minutes. Description: We did this hike as a shuttle from DIM to the Keno Access Road in 2011 and concluded two things; 1) the best part of the hike was the second half, and 2) it was a long shuttle. So this time we are only going to do the good part of the hike and skip the shuttle. Steady up to the lunch / view spot just east of Old Baldy. There is extra credit for summiting Vulture Rock on the way up - an extra 1/2 mile plus 250' of up for nice 360o views. Distance: 10 miles. Elevation gain: 1,700'. Weather forecast.
