Wednesday Hike Schedule for September 2014

Leave from the Safeway parking lot in Ashland at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. September 3: Mount Bailey (p. 56 in 100 Hikes) - Meet 8:00 AM
TH: Take Highway 62 to Union Creek, then branch left on Highway 230. Approximately 2.2 miles past the Crater Rim Viewpoint rest area make a left onto Road 3703. At the 5 mile mark, bear right at the intersection on FS 450 for another mile to the TH.  EDT: 2 hours. Description: Our favorite way up Mt. Bailey is the west side open woods approach.  This avoids the rough road to the upper TH or the much longer hike from the lower TH. Distance: 5.4 miles round trip. Elevation gain: 2,600'. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 190 mi.

September 10: Mt Thielsen (p. 52 in 101 Hikes) - Meet at 8:00 AM.
TH: take Highways 62 and 230 toward Diamond Lake; turn left (towards Roseburg) on Hwy 138 and drive 1.4 miles to TH; EDT: 2 hours. Description: Back by popular demand! Hike up past the junction with the PCT to about the 8,500' level where the trail disappears and the loose scree approach to the summit begins. This should be a nice warm-up for next week's assault on Mt. McLoughlin. Distance 9 miles; elevation gain: 2,000 feet; Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 190 mi

September 17: Clear Creek Trail - Mt. Shasta SE Flank - (P. 18 in The Mt. Shasta Book) Meet at 8:00
TH: Down I-5 past Mt. Shasta to the McCloud exit. East on Highway 89 for 13 miles to Pilgrim Creek Road, which is signed for the Mt. Shasta Wilderness Trailheads. Follow Pilgrim Creek NE for 5.3 miles to a left onto Road 41N15. Follow 41N15 NW for 4.9 miles to Road 31. Cross Road 31, keep left at 0.1 mile, and after 0.5 miles more bear left on 41N25Y. Take 41N25Y 1.6 miles to a veer left. Just 0.2 miles further turn right staying on 41N25Y for another 0.6 miles to the TH. EDT 2 hours. Description: Head up the south-eastern flank of Mt. Shasta for spectacular vistas along the rim of Mud Creek Canyon, Shasta's oldest and deepest canyon along with timberline panoramas of Shasta and its four eastern glaciers. At the 8,500' level traverse west 1/4 mile to the Clear Creek Springs for lunch. Distance 7 miles; elevation gain: 2,400'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 200 miles.

September 24: Gumboot Saddle to Devils Pocket - Meet at 8:00 AM, New Hike.
TH: Down I-5 to Exit 738, the Central Mount Shasta exit. Right on Hatchery Lane for 0.3 miles to a left on Old Stage Road for 0.3 miles. Straight on West A. Barr / NF 26 for 18 miles to the TH. EDT: 2 hours. Description: Thanks to Richard's tireless pursuit of his PCT Moby-Dick we have a new hike to enjoy. From Gumboot Saddle head south on the PCT for 4 miles with views from the ridge down into the Gumboot Lakes, Mumbo Lakes and the Seven Lakes basins. Lunch on the Saddle overlooking Devils Pocket with views of Shasta, Eddy and Lassen. Return the same way. Distance: 8 miles, Elevation gain: 800 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 185 miles.
