Wednesday Hike Schedule for May 2014

Leave from the Safeway parking lot in Ashland at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. May 7: Stein Butte (p. 149 in 100 Hikes)
TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T, left on Applegate Road for 0.9 mile and make a left just past the bridge into the parking area for the Seattle Bar TH. EDT 60 minutes.  Description: Steady up to a ridge crest for spectacular views of the Siskiyous and then on to the Stein Butte summit, site of an old fire lookout. Distance 9 miles.  2,400' elevation gain.  Weather Forecast. RT mileage 90 miles.

May 14: PCT from the Ski Road down to Old Highway 99.
TH: Leave shuttle car where the PCT crosses Old Highway 99 on Siskiyou Summit; continue up the Ski Road to the PCT crossing just before the 7-mile marker. Description: We haven't done this one since 2009, but we are frequently asked about it. So, lets do it again. Head north and downhill along this woodsy stretch of the PCT back to Siskiyou Summit; there are occasional openings with views; mostly downhill (~ 2,600') with some uphill thrown in (~800'). Since it is a short drive and a relatively short hike let's plan to have lunch at Callahan's or a restaurant of the group's choosing. Distance: 7 miles; Weather forecast. RT mileage: 40 miles.

May 21: PCT Across Brown Mountain. New hike. Meet at 8:00 am (p. 124 and p. 227 in 100 Hikes).
TH: Head up DIM past milepost 26. Immediately after entering Klamath County make a left on NF-3720 for 2.1 miles to a right on NF-700 / NF-3720 for 0.4 miles to the TH to drop the shuttle car. Continue on NF-3720 for 2.7 miles. Left on NF-3640 for 4.4 miles to Highway 140. Left on Highway 140 for 3 miles to the Summit Sno-Park TH. EDT: 70 minutes. Description: We have had this hike on the schedule several times in the ancient past but have never actually done it for various reasons. Walk across the lava fields with good views of McLoughlin. Distance: 10 miles; elevation gain: 1,500 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 90 miles.

May 28: Squaw Valley Creek Trail New Hike - Meet at 8:30 am
TH: South on I-5 past Shasta to the McCloud exit (736) and then east 10 miles on California 89 to the central McCloud exit. Right on Squaw Valley Road for 5.9 miles and then right on Politically Correct Valley Road (nee Squaw Valley Creek Road) signed for Squaw Valley Creek / Cabin Creek TH for 3 miles to the TH. EDT: 1:45. Description: An out and back walk along boisterous Cabin Creek (nee Squaw Valley Creek) to its intersection with Bear Trap Creek. The trail passes multiple rocky gorges and waterfalls. Distance: 10 miles; elevation gain: 800 feet. Spoiler alert: the elevation gain is all after lunch, but a barely noticeable 160 feet / mile. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 190 miles.
