Wednesday Hike Schedule for March 2014

Leave from the Safeway parking lot in Ashland at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. March 5: Enchanted Forest Trail to Ridge View (p. 3 Favorite Hikes of the Applegate)
TH: Thru Jacksonville and take Highway 238 towards Applegate for 15 miles. Just before downtown Applegate and the bridge, make a right onto North Applegate Road for 4.5 miles to a right on Kubli Road for 400' and then right on Slagle Creek Road for 1.5 miles to the pavement end at the TH. EDT: 60 minutes. Description: Take the Enchanted Forest trail up to the old jeep road and then head up to our lunch spot on the ridge below Sabin's Summit for views of the Applegate Valley and Red Buttes. Distance: 7 miles. Climbing: 1,800'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 80 miles.

March 12: Crater Lake Snowshoe - Leave Safeway at 8:00 AM
TH: Rim Village Cafe parking lot, Crater Lake NP; EDT: 2 hours. Description: Follow the rim of the lake in a clockwise direction; splendid views, if the weather is sunny; return the same way. Don't forget your sunglasses and sun block. Distance: 5 miles RT; elevation gain: 200-300 feet. Annie Springs SNOTEL. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 190 miles.

March 19: Kelsey Creek to Maple Falls (p. 45 in Best Hikes of the Marble and Russian Wilderness Areas) Meet at 8:30 AM. 
TH: Take I-5 to Yreka and follow Highway 3 to Fort Jones. Right on the Scott River Road for 17 miles. Past the Kelsey Guard Station and just before Bridge Flat the road crosses the Scott River. Immediately past the bridge go left on Kelsey Creek Road for 1/2 mile. Do not cross the second bridge but continue straight past the house to the roomy trailhead. EDT 90 minutes. Description: The Kelsey Trail was built by the army in the middle 1800s as a supply line from Crescent City to Ft. Jones. Follow Kelsey Creek to Maple Falls. Distance 9 miles; climbing 2,200'. Weather forecast. RT mileage 150 miles.

March 26: Cameron Meadows / Frog Pond Loop (p. 152 in 100 Hikes) Leave Safeway at 8:00 AM
TH: Take Hwy 238 from Jacksonville 8 miles to Ruch; turn left onto Upper Applegate Road for 19 miles past Applegate Lake; turn left onto Elliot Creek Road for 1.3 miles to the junction of FS 1040 and FS 1050. Sharp right onto FS 1040 for 9.7 miles to the Cameron Meadows TH on the left. EDT 90 minutes. Description: You may have heard about this hike, or read about it, and now you can do it. From the TH head uphill 1,600' to a lunch spot in Cameron Meadows. After lunch complete the loop by heading down the Frog Pond trail to FS 1040 and then 2 miles back on the road. Distance 8 miles; 2,000' elevation change. Weather Forecast. RT mileage 110 miles.
