Leave from the Safeway parking lot in Ashland at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. October 2: Sky High Valley in the Marbles (p. 54 in Best Hikes of the Marble Mountain and Russian Wilderness Areas) Kinda New Hike - Leaving Safeway at 8:00 AM. TH: I-5 down to the south Yreka exit. Take Highway 3 to From Fort Jones and take a right on the Scott River Road for 14 miles. Left on Indian Scotty Campground Road (NF-44N45) and continue 5.5 miles, then turn left onto NF-43N45 for 1.5 miles to Lover's Camp TH, staying on the paved road. Description: In 2011 we hiked up to Marble Valley. However, a splinter sect took a turn for the Sky High Valley and reported that it was quite scenic. So, this year, we are going to try to get the entire group up to the Sky High Lakes. From the TH we follow Canyon Creek Trail for 4 miles to the Shy High Valley turn (just past the creek crossing). Continue 1 mile to Gate Lake for lunch.  Distance 10 miles, elevation gain: 1,500 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage 160 miles.

October 9: Pilot Rock Road to Porcupine Mountain. TH: Take Mt Ashland exit 6 off I-5; follow old Highway 99 under the freeway for just a little over 2 miles; go left onto Pilot Rock Road and drive one mile to first crossing of PCT at the power line; EDT: 30 minutes. Description: Hike east on the PCT past Pilot Rock to the top of Porcupine Mountain; return via the trail and road. Distance: about 7.5 miles; elevation gain: about 2,000 ft. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles.

October 16:PCT: Hyatt Lake to Greensprings Summit. Hike leader: Mutineer Lynn. TH: Head up Highway 66 to Greensprings Summit and leave the shuttle car. Continue on to a left at the Greensprings Inn and then 3 miles to the PCT crossing. EDT: 45 minutes. Description: Walk along the PCT thru flower-filled woods and meadows. Since we last did this hike in 2010 a portion of the trail is new where the PCT has been rerouted to pass through a more scenic section as it goes out around Greensprings Mountain. The Ashland Hiking Group started out with an abbreviated version of this hike on June 27, 2001. Distance: about 6.5 miles; elevation gain: 1100 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 45 miles.

October 23: Mount Bailey (p. 56 in 100 Hikes) - Meet 8:00 AM- TH:Take Hwy 62 to Union Creek, then branch left on Hwy 230. Approximately 2.2 miles past the Crater Rim Viewpoint rest area make a left onto Road 3703 for 4.6 miles and then bear right on NF 450 for 0.7 miles to the TH.  EDT: 2 hr Description: We are going to avoid the rough road to the upper TH this year by taking the west side open woods ascent of about 6 miles and 2,800'. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 190 mi.

October 30: Fourmile Lake to Long Lake (p.116 in 100 Hikes) TH: Take DIM to Highway 140. Turn left towards Medford. Between Mileposts 36 and 35 turn right on FS 3661 for 5.7 miles to the Fourmile Lake Campground. Park at the official trailhead turnaround point. EDT 60 minutes. Description: Enjoy a late fall walk along the lakes in the Sky Lakes Wilderness to a lunch spot on Long Lake. Good views of the lakes and Mt. McLoughlin. Distance 8 miles; climbing 700'.
