Wednesday Hike Schedule for May 2013

Leave from the Safeway parking lot in Ashland at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. May 1: Upper Rogue River Trail - Round trip from Woodruff Bridge to River Bridge (p.84 in 100 Hikes) - Meet at 8:30 am
TH: Take Highway 62 towards Crater Lake and make a left onto FS 68 about 7 miles beyond Prospect; continue 2 miles to the TH at Woodruff Bridge; EDT: 90 min. Description: Down and back on the Takelma Gorge section of the Rogue River between Woodruff Bridge and River Bridge.  The trail is relatively flat, but with ups and downs . Poles are helpful on the uneven rocky sections of the trail. Distance: 8 miles; elevation gain: about 500 feet. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 140 miles.

May 8: Porcupine Gap to Soda Mountain Lookout (p. 130 in 100 Hikes) TH: New Hike. Take Mt. Ashland exit 6 off I-5; follow old Highway 99 under the freeway for a little over 2 miles; go left on Pilot Rock Road, drive about 2 miles to the old quarry; bear left (downhill) onto dirt road some 3.8 miles to the PCT access at Porcupine Gap. EDT: 45 minutes. Description: hike northeast along the PCT past Little Pilot Peak with open stretches with wonderful views and cool stretches among Douglas firs with Spotted Coralroot and Phantom orchids in bloom. The final 1/2 mile up to the Soda Mountain Lookout is off the PCT and uphill about 350 feet through open woods and meadow. Great views from the lookout. Distance: 10 miles; elevation gain: 1,800 feet. Weather Forecast. RT driving mileage: 40 miles.

May 15: Union Creek Trail (p.88 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:30 am
TH: Take Highway 62 north from Medford to Union Creek; EDT: 90 minutes. Description: This is a scenic, "generally level", 4-mile trail along a lovely brook. Could this be Jim's year to get to go to Becky's? Distance: 8.2 miles; elevation gain: 600 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.

May 22: PCT from Old 99 to Pilot Rock
TH: Take I-5 to the Mt. Ashland exit.  Proceed under I-5 to the PCT crossing. EDT: 30 min.  Description: follow the PCT towards Pilot Rock and return the same way.  Climbing Pilot Rock is optional (long pants recommended).  Distance 9 miles; climbing 1,500 feet (add 500 feet for a successful Pilot Rock summit). Weather forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles

May 29: High Lakes - Fish Lake Trail from Lake of the Woods to FS 37 (p. 122 in 100 Hikes).
TH: Follow DIM 22 miles to FS 37; go left 7 miles to the North Fork Campground and leave a shuttle car; continue to Highway 140, make a right, continue 6.4 miles to a right again at the Brown Mountain Trails sign on FS 3601 (west side of Lake of the Woods) to the High Lakes Trail Crossing TH. EDT: 60 minutes.
Description: follow High Lakes trail west 6 miles to the Fish Lake resort and then continue another 4 miles to FS 37 on the Fish Lake trail; trail parallels Highway 140. Distance: 9.3 miles; elevation gain: 750 ft. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 100 mi
