Sunday August 4: Hiking Group Summer Party

August 7: Squaw Meadow and Gray Butte (Mt Shasta) (p. 218 in 100 Hikes) TH: Take the first Mt. Shasta Exit (mile 740). East on Mt. Shasta Blvd. to the first left and then left on Ski Village Drive over to Everitt Memorial Highway to Panther Meadows parking lot. EDT: 90 minutes. Description: We skipped this one last year because of the smoke. This time we will be doing the loop in a counterclockwise direction, having lunch atop Gray Butte. The Squaw Meadow loop starts at 7,440 ft and reaches a high point of 8,300 ft; Distance: 6 miles; climbing: 1,800'. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 180 miles.

August 14: Kayak the Rogue River from Hog Creek to Argo Landing - Meet at 7:30 AM. TH; Up I-5 to Exit 61 and follow the signs to Merlin. Orange Torpedo / Rogue River Center is on the right in downtown Merlin just past the Shell station. EDT: 60 minutes. We liked this one so much last summer that we are going to do it again. Orange Torpedo Trips will be providing the kayaks and the shuttle. We will kayak the 12.5 miles from Hog Creek downstream to the take out at Argo Landing (Argo is about 2 miles upstream from Grave Creek, which is closed because it is being used by the fire fighters), through Hellgate Canyon and over class I and class II rapids. Cost is about $37 per person for the kayak rental and shuttle. This trip is self guided and does not include lunch, so you will need to bring your own lunch and a change of clothes if you would like to change into dry clothes for the ride home. Weather Forecast. August 21: Clear Creek Trail - Mt. Shasta SE Flank - (P. 18 in The Mt. Shasta Book) New Hike - Meet at 8:00 TH: Down I-5 past Mt. Shasta to the McCloud exit. East on Highway 89 for 13 miles to Pilgrim Creek Road, which is signed for the Mt. Shasta Wilderness Trailheads. Follow Pilgrim Creek NE for 5.3 miles to a left onto Road 41N15. Follow 41N15 NW for 4.9 miles to Road 31. Cross Road 31, keep left at 0.1 mile, and after 0.5 miles more bear left on 41N25Y. Take 41N25Y 1.6 miles to a veer left. Just 0.2 miles further turn right staying on 41N25Y for another 0.6 miles to the TH. EDT 2 hours. Description: Head up the eastern side of Mt. Shasta for spectacular vistas along the rim of Mud Creek Canyon, Shasta's oldest and deepest canyon along with timberline panoramas of Shasta and its four eastern glaciers. At the 8,300' level traverse west 1/4 mile to the Clear Creek Springs for lunch. Distance 6 miles; elevation gain: 1,800'. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 200 miles.

August 28: PCT from Siskiyou Gap to Wrangle Gap. Hike leader Margita LaGrotta TH: From Talent take Rapp Rd and Wagner Creek Rd 7.6 mi to junction with FS 22; follow FS 22 to junction with FS 20; follow FS 20 for 1/2 mile west to PCT crossing at Siskiyou Gap. Description: Follow the PCT west around Big Red to Wrangle Gap. Summit Big Red for lunch and then return east along the ridge with a short bushwhack back to the PCT. Distance 7 miles, 2,000' of climbing. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 50 miles.
