October 3: Grayback Mountain (p. 160 in 100 Hikes) TH: Take Highway 238 from Jacksonville and cross the bridge just beyond the Applegate store. Left on Thompson Creek Road for 11.9 miles to pavement end and make a right on Road 1005. After 0.3 miles on 1005 stay left to remain on 1005. It is then an additional 3.5 miles on Road 1005 to the TH. Description: We did this one the hard way last year, bushwhacking up through the open meadow. This year we are going to take a hopefully easier route to the summit. After the second creek crossing, bear right and uphill on the trail at the junction (not sure of the name here, it may be the Boundary Trail, Cold Spring Trail or the Windy Gap Trail). At the next junction turn right on the Windy Gap trail and head up to the ridge and then walk up the ridge to the summit for panoramic views from the Pacific Ocean near Crescent City, to Mt. Shasta, Mt McLoughlin and Crater Lake rim. Distance 6 miles. Elevation gain 2,500 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage 100 miles.
October 10: Mt Thielsen (near Diamond Lake) (p. 52 in 101 Hikes - Meet at 8:00 AM. TH: take Highways 62 and 230 toward Diamond Lake; turn left (towards Roseburg) on Hwy 138 and drive 1.4 miles to TH; EDT: 120 minutes. Description: Back by popular demand! Hike to the junction with the PCT, then return the same way; We can go a bit above the PCT junction if the group would like to see what the loose scree approach to the summit is like. Distance 7.6 miles; elevation gain: 2,000 feet; Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 190 mi
October 17: Fourmile Lake to Long Lake (p.116 in 100 Hikes) TH: Take DIM to Highway 140. Turn left towards Medford. Between Mileposts 36 and 35 turn right on FS 3661 for 5.7 miles to the Fourmile Lake Campground. Park at the official trailhead turnaround point. EDT 60 minutes. Description: Enjoy a late fall walk along the lakes in the Sky Lakes Wilderness to a lunch spot on Long Lake. Good views of the lakes and Mt. McLoughlin. Distance 8 miles; climbing 700'. October 24: Briggs Creek (p. 184 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:00 AM TH: I-5 to the Merlin exit and then 8.5 miles towards Galice. Left on Briggs Valley Road 25 for 13.4 miles. After Big Pine Campground turn right on Road 2512 for 0.3 mile then left into the Sam Brown Campground and park near the two picnic shelters. EDT 90 minutes. Description: Starting at an old mining ghost town follow the trail along the mountain stream past active mining claims and old hydraulic mines and a flume ditch through old-growth forest to a burned out miner's cabin. The trail passes through a section of the 2010 Oak Flat fire area. There are 3 creek crossings on fallen tree trunks. Distance 9 miles. 1,700' elevation gain. Weather forecast. RT mileage 150 miles
October 31: Upper Rogue: Hersberger Bridge to Natural Bridge - Meet at 8:30 AM. TH: Take Highway 62 East from Medford towards Crater Lake; on the way, leave a shuttle car at the Natural Bridge picnic area. At the Highway 62 / Highway 230 junction continue straight on Highway 230 for 0.9 miles to the first left on Hersberger Road, cross the Rogue River and proceed 0.6 mile to the TH on Hersberger Road. EDT: 90 minutes. Description: Take the Rogue River Trail (1034) down the North and West side of the Rogue River to the Natural Bridge campground. Lots of big old trees on this hike. We will be crossing Flat Creek on the bridge rather than attempting a ford. Distance: 8 miles; elevation gain: mostly downhill with small ups and downs. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.
