May 2: Rainie Falls New Hike TH: Take I-5 north to Merlin (Exit 60); drive thru Merlin and follow Galice Rd 19 miles to the Grave Creek Bridge. Park on the near side of the bridge. EDT: 90 min Description: We always do the north rim so for something completely different we are going to follow the south rim of the Rogue River canyon to Rainie Falls this year. Spectacular scenery and the side streams / waterfalls should be in full flow. The Spring Chinook should be running. Distance: 4 miles; generally flat but with lots of small ups and downs. May 9: Applegate Lake Payette Trail (p. 147 in 100 Hikes) TH: Take Hwy 238 from Jacksonville area to Ruch (8 miles); take Upper Applegate Road 15 miles to Applegate Dam; drive left across dam to French Gulch TH (1.2 miles) and leave shuttle car. Return to Upper Applegate Road and continue south to T. Left on Elliot Creek Road for 0.9 miles. Just past the bridge make a left at the Seattle Bar day use area and follow the road around until it ends at the Manzanita Trailhead; EDT: 70 min Description: Take the Payette Trail northward as it follows the Applegate Lake shore back to the French Gulch TH. Enjoy the views from Hank's Point and Hal's Point. Distance: 8.5 miles; elevation gain: about 500 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles
May 16:Union Creek Trail (p.88 in 100 Hikes Meet 8:30 am
TH: Take Hwy 62 east from Medford to Union Creek; EDT: 90 min
Description: This is a scenic, "generally level", 4-mile trail along a lovely brook.
Distance: 8.2 miles; elevation gain: 500 ft. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.
May 23: PCT round trip from Soda Mountain Road to Boccard Point - New Hike TH: From Hwy 66 turn onto Soda Mountain Road just before reaching Greensprings Summit; proceed some 5 miles to PCT crossing right after passing under power lines for the second time, EDT: 90 minutes. We tried to do this one in 2010 but gave up because of snow coverage and headed to the Greensprings Inn for a warm lunch inside. Description: follow PCT south some 2.75 miles thru woods and past meadows; a little way beyond Little Pilot Peak turn left for about 1 mile on abandoned road to Boccard Point for lunch; after lunch bushwhack over to the Soda Mountain Lookout and return via the road. Distance: about 7.5 miles; elevation gain: 1,200 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 50 miles
May 30: South Fork of the Rogue River- Upper Segment New Hike (p. 110 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:30 TH:Take DIM to Highway 37. North on Highway 37 to 140. East on 140 for 1,000' to County Road 821 (Butte Falls Fish Lake Road). Up Butte Falls Fish Lake Road for 9.1 miles then right on NF-3065 (Parker Meadows Road) for 5.7 miles to NF-37. Straight on NF-37 for 6.3 miles to the Upper TH at the bridge. Drop shuttle car here and continue on NF-37 for 5.5 miles to Lodgepole Road. Left 120 yards to the Middle TH. EDT: 90 minutes. Description: Head south along the South Fork of the Rogue River through big trees and wildflowers. Distance 6 miles; elevation gain: about 500 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 120 miles.
