Wednesday Hike Schedule for June 2012

Leave from the Safeway parking lot in Ashland at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. June 6: Grizzly Peak  (p. 138 in 100 Hikes). TH: Drive Dead Indian Memorial Highway 6.7 miles; turn left on Shale City Road (paved but potholed) for 3 miles; Left on BLM 38-2E-9.2 to 5 way intersection. Straight (Grizzly Peak Trail sign) and continue uphill 0.9 miles to the TH. EDT: 30 minutes. Description: spring flowers should be in bloom on this popular trail near Ashland. Distance: 5 miles; elevation gain: 1,200 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 30 miles.

June 13: High Lakes-Fish Lake Trail from Fish Lake to Lake of the Woods (p. 122 in 101 Hikes) TH: Take DIM to the Lake of the Woods Resort and drop the shuttle car. Then up to Highway 140 and west for 5.9 miles to the Fish Lake Resort. Park in the Dog Point campground parking lot. EDT: 60 minutes. Description: We usually do this one east to west. So, for something completely different, we are going to hike from Fish Lake eastward over Brown Mountain to the Lake of the Woods Resort. Insect repellent may be useful. Distance: 8 miles; elevation gain: 1,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 100 miles

June 20: South Fork of the Rogue River- Lower Segment New Hike (p. 110 in 100 Hikes) Meet at 8:30 TH: Head up Highway 62 past the penstocks for 0.3 miles to a right on the Prospect Access Road for 0.3 miles, left on Mill Creek Drive for 1.5 miles, right onto Red Blanket Road for 1.1 miles, straight onto Butte Falls Prospect Road for 5.2 miles, left onto Imnaha Road for 3.9 miles, right at the corner on Imnaha for 0.1 miles and finally right onto narrow local road 690 for 0.4 miles to the Lower TH where we will drop the shuttle car. Return to the main road and make a right onto East South Fork Road for 5.2 miles and then a right on Lodgepole road for 50 yards to the Middle TH. EDT: 2 hours. Description: We did the upper section in May. This time we will head downstream following along the river's canyon amongst big sugar pines and Doug firs. Distance 6 miles; elevation gain: generally downhill. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 150 miles.

June 27 PCT from Cook & Green Pass to Lilly Pad Lake (p. 150 in 100 Hikes) TH: Past Applegate Lake to the T. Left on Elliot Creek Road / NF-1050 for 2.1 miles. Right on NF-1055 for 9.8 miles to the TH at Cook & Green Pass. High clearance vehicles recommended. EDT: 90 minutes. Description: Follow the PCT west along the crest with views of the Red Buttes, Mt. Shasta and the Klamath River Basin along with the Marble Mountains. Return via the old mining road and Bee Camp Spring. Distance: 8.5 miles; elevation gain about 2,000 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage: 110 miles.
