September 7: Mt McLoughlin (p. 110 in 100 Hikes) - Meet at 7:00 AM; TH: Take DIM to the end at Highway 140. Turn left (west) onto 140 for 1.9 miles to Fourlmile Lake Road (FS 3661), turn right towards Fourmile Lake for 2.9 mi; then turn left on FS 3650 for 0.2 mi to TH parking lot; EDT: 90 min Description: Up, up, up and more up all the way to the top; only the last 1.2 mile, 1300 ft elevation gain portion is really steep; climbing to the summit is not mandatory. This is a demanding hike. Please bring enough water to stay hydrated (3+ liters). Hiking poles are useful on the descent of the upper mountain as we come down over the boulder field. Distance: 9.5 mi; elev gain: 3,975 ft. RT mileage: about 90 mi.
September 14: Boundary Springs and Garfield Peak New Hike (p. 59 and p. 68 in 101 Hikes) - Meet at 8:00 AM TH: Take Highway 62 to the junction with Highway 230. Continue on for 18 miles to the Crater Rim Viewpoint parking area. EDT 90 minutes. By popular demand we are adding these two shorter hikes in one day. We will NOT adjourn to the Lodge terrace until AFTER the Garfield Peak Summit. The round trip hike to the headwaters of the Rogue River is an easy, fairly flat, 4 miles. Return to the car and continue on to the North Entrance of Crater Lake National Park and then down to the Lodge parking lot. To the Garfield Peak summit and back is 3.4 miles and about 1,000' of elevation gain. Total distance about 7.5 miles. Elevation gain about 1,500'. Return to Ashland via Fort Klamath. RT mileage: 205 miles.
September 21: Grayback Mountain (p. 160 in 100 Hikes) New Hike TH: Take Highway 238 from Jacksonville and cross the bridge just beyond the Applegate store. Left on Thompson Creek Road for 11.9 miles to pavement end and make a right on Road 1005. 4 miles on Road 1005 to the TH. Follow O'Brien Creek to the Grayback Snow Shelter and Krause Log Cabin. Then up the meadow to the Grayback Mountain summit for panoramic views from the Pacific Ocean near Crescent City, to Mt. Shasta, Mt McLoughlin and Crater Lake rim. Distance 5 miles. Elevation gain 1,800 feet. RT mileage 100 miles.
September 28: Hidden Valley - Mt. Shasta New Hike - Meet at 8:00 AM TH:Take I-5 72 mi south to Central Mt Shasta exit 738; drive thru town 1 mi, then go left on Everitt Memorial Highway up to Bunny Flat. EDT: 90 min; Description: Hike up to Horse Camp and the Sierra Club lodge to pick up the Mt. Shasta Circumnavigation Trail. From there head up sandy forested slopes to the pinnacle overlooking Hidden Valley and the high mountain grandeur of Shasta and Shastina. 8 miles, 2,700 feet of climbing. RT mileage 180 miles.
