Wednesday Hike Schedule for March 2011

Leave from Safeway parking lot in Ashland at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear. TH = trailhead; EDT = estimated drive time; PCT = Pacific Crest Trail; DIM = Dead Indian Memorial Highway. 100 Hikes = 100 Hikes in Southern Oregon, Second Edition

March 2: - Summit Sno-Park  - New Snowshoe Trip
TH: Follow DIM to its end at Highway 140.  Left on 140 for 5.2 miles to the Summit Sno-Park; Sno-Park Permit Required. EDT: 75 min. Description: Make a loop on the cross country ski trails; Up Lower Canal (J) for 1.3 miles, east on Big Mac (I) for 1.3 miles, clockwise on McLoughlin (F) for 2.5 miles and back to the car on Petunia (H) for 0.7 miles. Distance: 5.8 miles; elev. gain: 800 feet. RT mileage: 100 miles.

March 9: Reeder Reservoir TH: Walk or drive from Safeway to the White Rabbit trailhead.  Follow trails to Lamb Saddle and pick up the trail down to the reservoir.  Distance: about 5 miles with 1,600' of climbing from the White Rabbit trailhead.  Add 4 miles and 1,200' if starting from Safeway.  RT Mileage: 2 mi.

March 16: Jacksonville Trail System TH: City parking lot in Jacksonville behind post office; EDT: 30 min Description: A random loop walk on the Jacksonville trail system.  Lunch in a Jacksonville restaurant of the group's choosing. Distance: about 6 miles and 1,500' of climbing total.  RT mileage: 30 mi

March 23: Crater Lake Ranger-led Snowshoe Tour - meet 8 AM; TH: We will meet Ranger Kerra at park headquarters (rumble strips, just before you start up the steep part of the road) at 10 AM; EDT: 2 hours. Description: Before lunch we will have a 2 hour snowshoe walk with the ranger along the crater's rim. She will provide snowshoes if people do not have their own. After lunch we will proceed on our own westward along the rim until we have had enough. Don't forget your sunglasses and sun block. Note: Rim Village Cafe is open during the winter for those who do not want the extra walk after lunch. Distance: 4 to 5 miles; elev gain: 500'. RT Mileage: 180 miles

March 30: Rogue River Trail, east from Peyton Bridge (p.79 in 100 Hikes) TH: From Medford drive 35.5 mi on Hwy 62; turn left on Lewis Rd to Peyton Bridge TH parking area (east end of Lost Creek Lake); EDT: 60 min Description: Follow trail along north shore of Rogue River some 3.5 mi; return same way; substantial ups and downs. We are not planning on doing Needle Rock this year. Distance: about 7 mi RT; total elev. gain: about 1000 ft. RT mileage: 100 mi
