Sterling Mine Ditch - Tunnel Ridge to Little Applegate TH 5-28-21

A perfect day and off we went.

We used a shuttle to do a one way hike from the Tunnel Gulch TH to the East Applegate TH. Tunnel Gulch is more interesting than Bear Gulch and cuts out some boring mine ditch. The trail climbs 500 feet in a mile to the Mine Ditch. Then you follow the ditch south until you cross the second of two small bridges. At that point you look for the trail going left up the hill, perhaps a quarter mile or less further. There is no sign.

Now you climb 500 feet to the lunch spot, 1,000' in total. There is a good log to sit on but we opted for shade. There are some good views over to Dutchman's Peak and Big Red Mountain. They still had some snow here and there.

After lunch it is mainly sideways or downhill. It is a pretty trail, sometimes in the woods and sometimes on a ridge. At mile 5.75 of the hike it drops 1 1/2 mile down to the TH. Note that the posted mileages are incorrect. It is 5.75, not 5 miles from Tunnel Gulch TH to the descent from the mine ditch and a 1/2 mile, not a mile, down to the TH. The total hike is about 6.25 miles and 1,300 feet of ascent.

Once again, Sunny proved her worth in hopping into the 3rd row seat for the shuttle. We stopped at Boomtown and were aghast that the fryer was broken. Dana, our intrepid server, told us to look at the bright side of things. "You are here, I am here. The beer is here." Her logic was irrefutable. Irene Simms happily joined us at Boomtown and Dana watered her dog. All was good.
