Sterling Mine Ditch - Bear Gulch to Little Applegate 12-3-18

Photos by Bob, Jeff and Patricia

On a cold day in December, 14 hardy Monday hikers headed for the hills. We started from Bear Gulch and headed for East Applegate Trailhead, a 9.3 mile extravaganza. On the way we encountered snow, mud and some unforced errors, although it was a very nice day for hiking.

I will use trail names to hide the persons involved. Lancelot heard that Lady Gueneviere's glove had been dropped so he headed back to look for it. Moses returned to guide him forward with a radio. That was accomplished but while solving every conceivable problem of OSF, they skipped past an obvious trail turn up the hill to the left. This led them to a continually deteriorating trail along the ditch. Your leader then dispatched his number 1 recovery team, the Wyatts, to save the day. This required them to give up 500+ feet of altitude, a noble gesture. They did find the lost duo and the latter had to bushwhack a bit to join them. Meanwhile the main body luxuriated on the beach in the sun. Finally the lost patrol got through the winter zone feet and joined them.

Overall it was a very nice hike and some of the hikers met at Elisabeth Zenser's house to greet carol singers gathering goodies for the food bank. The Wyatts get much extra credit, an honor of nominal value.
