Jack-Ash Trail - Greenstone TH to Anderson Ridge TH 9-30-19

It was a September Day to remember as our group of ten experienced hikers braved several weather changes on today's hike. Following a rainy weekend we headed up towards the Jacksonville- Ashland trail system under threatening skies with temps in the low 40's.

Our seasoned crew were ready for anything as all wore gloves, water repellent gear and lots of layers. But as we made the 1,000 foot ascent the rain held off and the sun broke through the clouds giving us great views of the ridge, the pristine valley below, and the cloud and snow covered mountains across the valley. It was a dramatic view enjoyed by all. Perhaps the threatening weather made us pick up the pace and we arrived at our usual lunch spot next to Anderson Butte Road at 11:20.

So after filling in the hikers registry, we decided to continue across the road and head up the unimproved future section of the J-A trail for another 15 minutes until we found a wide bank with views of the valley and mountains and settled there for lunch. With more storm clouds moving in we made a quick start back down the ridge. As soon as we started back the temperature dropped to the 30's and it began snowing! Or what we called snowish. Tiny corn snow petals fell causing Jeff to announce "I forgot my hard hat!" The leader quoted Shakespeare with "once more into the breach dear friends "and Liz took off as if shot from a gun. We made it back down from 4,800 feet in record time. And we all headed to the Pump House in Talent for refreshments!

The hike was 7 miles out and back.

Next week's hike will be our Fall colors hike on the Upper Rogue leaving at 8:30.

And there are still plenty of rooms available for our Overnight to Crescent City on October 21-22.

Happy Trails,
Rich
