Jack-Ash Trail: Greenstone TH to Anderson Ridge TH 1-18-21

Photos by Jerry and Linda

It started as a cold foggy day as 8 of us met at Rite Aid. We were surprised and welcomed John who showed up for "one of my favorite hikes". And we also welcomed back Bob and Margita both returning from two weeks quarantine after visiting out of state.

On our way out to the hike Liz joined the caravan at Ray's Market in Phoenix. From there we wound our way up to the trailhead where we met Jerry and the Bryans (Linda, Randy and son Luke) for a baker's dozen for this popular hike. We decided to split our large group in two with Rich leading 7 and Jerry following five minutes later with 6 hikers.

The hike starts out with icy puddles and spent cartridges at the parking area and is a steady climb through the broken Serpentine rocks that give the Greenstone Trail it's name.  After about a mile you reach the Jack-Ash Trail post. From there it's another mile following switchbacks up through the forest as you hike towards Anderson Ridge.

At the Ridge the group was elated at the sudden change from chilly dark forest to bright blue skies, warm sun and great views of snow covered peaks and the fog covered Little Applegate valley below.

We took the scenic Ridge trail out to our grassy lunch spot by Anderson Butte road. There we were all treated to samples of Liz's homemade Rose Hip jam, which was a big hit! Liz and Nanci had picked the rose hips out at Emigrant Lake. After two weeks in a bowl of "cheap red wine" on her counter, Liz strained the hips through a press which yielded her wonderful jam.

After lunch and returning on the Ridge trail, I gave the group an option for an extra credit hike up to the top of Anderson Butte which added another mile to the hike. Nine of us had great views including snow covered Mt. McLoughlin bursting out of the fog below.

Our group was happy with the hike and escaping the thick valley fog for the bright warm sun on the ridge.

Greenstone to Anderson Ridge plus up to Anderson Butte was 7.5 miles with about 1,000' of gain.

Happy Trails,
Rich
