A funny thing happened on the way to Sterling Mine Ditch. As we approached the 4 mile marker on Sterling Creek Road the sun came out and some blue sky appeared. Seizing the moment I detoured right to the parking for the East Applegate Ridge Trail.
It was a new adventure for some as we headed along the ridge. There were flowers everywhere which caused a few delays as Liz conjured up the names. The weather cooperated, other than a bit of hail from one black cloud. We went along the ridge and over, and stopped at the same point we did long ago on the scouting trip, at about 3.9 miles. This is the point where the trail starts into some back and forth down the hill to HWY 238. The good news is the mud has largely dried up, and a runner came by from that direction.
The sun really came out and we found a great place with a view for lunch. The march back was accelerated somewhat by Bob P playing the energizer bunny as he rambled off into the distance. I contented myself with amble speed uphill and a stroll thereafter. The first-timers loved the trail and all of us were ready to go back in good weather when the longer views open up.
We all headed to Boomtown where the usual VIP treatment was accorded, the fryer being turned on as we parked the cars. Our server once again did her magic trick of stabilizing the tables in a jiffy with beer coasters. The fries were up to the usual standard. My reputation has spread as she soon snuck up behind and asked if I was ready for my second Stella.
A great day where we dodged the bullet on the weather. It was a howling storm by the time we got back to Phoenix, with Jon dodging hail stones at Ray's.
