Jack-Ash Trail - Deming to Grub to Griffin 1-31-22

We all managed to arrive at the end of the hiking trail (yes, 7595 Griffin Lane) to park two shuttle cars for our group of eight👍. Then with the remaining cars we drove to the trailhead (up Griffin Lane) left on Sterling Creek Road, then left on Deming-Armstrong Road up to the Deming Gulch TH ).

It was a chilly morning in the 30s so we started a half hour later at 9:30 to avoid some of the cold. That seemed to work plus our hikers wore layers to ward off the chill.

The Grub Gulch Trail, of course, is part of the Sterling Mine Ditch system (30+ miles). Today we'd be hiking 6 miles along the Deming / Grub Gulch Ditch then 2+ miles on a stretch of the Jack Ash Trail that is new to the AHG Monday group🙌.

We had partly sunny skies (we miss Sunny 😒 ) and temps that never rose above 45 degrees, but felt warmer with all our hiking.

The first three miles of ditch trail are mostly flat and end at a locked gate with a large house on the other side. About 4 years ago, the Monday group did this hike as an out and back and had lunch sitting by the side of the trail switching uphill.

Today we continued up a series of long, gentle switch backs until we reached the bench and the sunny view spot for our lunch 😁. This spot is at 2,900' and the TH is 2600' so only about 300' of gain on this 8+ mile hike.

After lunch we continued up one more switch back then into the shaded forest still on the Grub Gulch Trail. It would deposit us onto an old grassy road (mostly level) which eventually dipped into a gully with another road leading off to the left; this was the forgotten part of the Jack Ash Trail ☺!

At this point, Jerry suggested we continue up Grub Gulch to a metal gate (about 1/4 mile). This is the end of the 6 miles of the Grub Gulch Trail.

On the other side of the gate is BLM Road 39-2-3. And down that road to the right is another unscouted part of the Jack Ash Trail that leads to the Greenstone TH. (Heads up to future hikers on this stretch as you're moving towards target shooting ranges!)

Finally, we came back down from the gate and turned onto today's exploration of the Jack Ash Trail. We noticed lots of postings of active mining claims on the Grub and JA trails, so proceed with caution, though we didn't come across any angry Yosemite Sams 😡.

The Jack Ash Trail is at first a road; then there's a bypass footpath (around private property) through Oak groves and Manzanita shrubs winding through forest before coming out on the old road and to the gate where our shuttle cars are parked on the other side.

Altogether, about 8.2 miles with 300' of gain. Looking back, the smiles on our hikers' faces were unanimous☺! So I'd say it was a great day!

Happy Trails,
Rich
