High Lakes Trail 11-20-19

Things started out a bit inauspiciously at Rite Aid. We had a head count of 11 people which required 4 vehicles to minimize the wait time for the shuttles at the start and end of the hike. But what we didn’t notice until we got to the TH was that one of the 11 had decided to hike with the other group also meeting at 9:00 AM at Rite Aid. So, we could have easily done the hike with 3 vehicles.

The drivers dropped the advance team hikers at the North Fork TH and then continued on to position the vehicles at the High Lakes TH. While waiting for the drivers to return from setting up the shuttle, the advance team set off to visit the Fish Lake dam and to look for the Fish Lake SNOTEL. The hike along Little Butte Creek was pleasant and the advance team was soon on top of the dam but we didn’t linger long there because of the brisk wind.

The next activity was to try and locate the Fish Lake SNOTEL. So the advance team returned to the High Lakes trail and headed north for a quarter mile or so before leaving the trail and bush whacking back towards the lake and hopefully the SNOTEL. After a bit of wandering around we did find the SNOTEL and also saw that we could have easily gotten to it by just following the road heading north from the top of the dam. At that point, the drivers were on top of the dam and we collected them and walked them back to show them the SNOTEL.

If you are interested in understanding more about SNOTELs, you can read how they work here, and see a map of locations here.

We had lunch at the Fish Lake resort sitting on a picnic table and log with nice views of Brown Mountain and Fish Lake. There was a bit of grumbling when the group learned that the hike leader had not had the foresight to secure chocolate for the after-lunch treat. At one point some were even saying that they wanted Keeley back. But the sun was moving and whereas we had started lunch in full sun we were soon in the shade and with temperatures in the low to mid-30s we were soon moving again.

The hike across the lava beds was interesting as usual and we soon had regained the cars and it was back to Ashland where some of us took refreshment at Caldera.
