High Lakes Trail 11-15-17

A Few Pics by Dan and Keeley

Six of us headed to Fish Lake uncertain what the weather would bring, since rain and snow were forecast after 10 AM.  The group from Ashland (meeting the group from Medford) headed up DIM and discovered that the second half of DIM, past the Howard Prairie/Hyatt turnoff, was very slick, being partially covered with melting snow and ice.  Thus, it took us a bit longer to get to the Brown Mountain TH near Lake of the Woods.  After some discussion, we decided where to leave a shuttle car, then off to Fish Lake to start our hike.

It turned out that over 50% of the trail was partially covered with hard packed snow between 1 to 5 inches deep.  We were all praying that the rain/snow would not arrive before we at least had lunch, and maybe not until we arrived to our cars.  Lunch was taken about half way, where it seemed we were protected from the wind.  However, as soon as we sat down, the cold wind arrived to keep us company.  It was between 34 - 36 degrees the whole hike and the wind increased as we left lunch and headed back down to Lake of the Woods.

This was not one of the outstanding hikes of the year, but it was good to get outside and commune with nature for a few hours.  It did not rain or snow on us to any measureable degree until we got back to our cars, so that was a blessing.  Refreshments were taken at Buffalo Wings in Medford.
