On Wednesday we had planned to snowshoe at Buck Prairie and do the Fawn Hollow Loop. The forecast had winds with potential gusts up to 28mph. I decided to make a decision in the parking lot before we left if we should perhaps do the watershed. Marilyn emailed and told me that the watershed had lots of downfall so she was going to have a gym day. Scott was the only one who showed up. We both wanted to snowshoe, but decided to play it safe and walk along the greenway.
We drove down to the dog park off Almeda Street and put on our rain gear. It was 45° and only 9:22am when we started out. I had never been on this section of the greenway so it was all new to me. As we walked along, we could see a lot of where the Almeda Fire had burned. We came to a sign that had an overhead view of the area that the fire burned. There was an outline of the fire perimeter. Scott showed me how close it got to his home in Phoenix.
As we went along, we could see that birds were perched in trees. We saw a Blue Heron and 2 geese that were perched on top of burned tree trunks. We discussed that we had not seen geese in trees before. We also saw 3 chunky animals with fluffy tails run across the greenway. My guess was racoons, but they were too fast and in hiding by the time we got to the spot they had crossed.
After 4 miles, we turned around and headed back to our cars. It was only 12:23pm when we got back. We had walked 8.11 miles and only gained 258 feet of elevation.
