East Applegate Ridge 3-17-21

We were headed up Anderson Butte to hike the Jack-Ash Trail from the Greenstone TH. As we got higher, the snow got deeper. At the TH, there was a good 6" to 8" of soft snow on the ground. After careful deliberation, we decided to head back down to hike the East Applegate Ridge trail which is about 1,700' lower at the start and which was snow free on Wednesday.

We did an out and back of around 5 miles enjoying a leisurely lunch in the sun overlooking the Applegate Valley. The trail had some muddy spots but was mostly dry. When we arrived at the TH there was a volunteer from the Applegate Trails Association who was doing a user count. He was still there when we returned to the TH and told us that his shift was from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and that the ATA uses the data on user-days when applying for grants.

Refreshments were enjoyed on John's patio with Liz and George providing a selection of cheeses and crackers and our host providing wine and beer of choice.
