Winburn Camp 1-20-22

The hiking buddies (Jerry, Randy & I) went on a scouting hike Thursday because they noticed an old road south of West Ashland Creek going up from Reeder Reservoir.

We started at the Wite Rabbit TH off Ashland Loop Road and took the Caterpillar Trail over to Lamb Saddle. From there we headed down the 0.8 mile trail to Reeder. The bottom of the trail follows the East Fork of Ashland Creek down to the reservoir. Then we crossed the icy bridge (closed to vehicles but not foot traffic) and followed the service road around to the left towards the West Fork of Ashland Creek.

The creek flows over the road with 3-6 inches of cold water. So the resourceful Jerry pulled out a box of white garbage bags which we used to cover our boots while crossing the creek. After crossing the water with varying degrees of success we managed to find the old overgrown road heading up the west side of the Ashland Creek West Fork.

You hike about 2.5 miles up the old road (which has a pretty foot path down the middle) until you come to another creek flowing into the West Fork of Ashland Creek from the right. This is Weasel Creek. If you're as lucky as me you'll look up and see the sign for "Sap & Salt in the Woods" 1922. That sign tells you that you've reached the beginning of Jesse Winburn's Resort Camp.

Ashland HistoryI've included some pics and some historic information. All the old buildings were pulled down in the 1960s, but you can still find moss covered foundations and retaining walls.

This hike is about 10 miles RT with about 2,000' gain.

Enjoy,
Rich Stickle
